I never cared about split ends in the early days so I've never had a trim but now they're working their way up the hairs :o Also haven't been in a hairdressers for nearly 3 years, do I just say take off the split ends or will they take off too much if I say that or do I say take off a few centimetres? Thanks for any help! :)
Actually I'm not even sure these are split ends, they're bends and curls at the ends of alot of my hair, (I have extremley straight hair) and I think they've happened over the last few weeks (I have normal split ends too though)?
Unfortunately, trimming is an only cure for split ends. But your hair will then appear to grow out faster and you will reach back to your old length shortly. You can go through each hair strand, and cut off the damaged ones.

Thank you! :) And thanks to the other people who answered! So I should do this myself every three months?
It depends on how long your hair is. If you are growing through the ackward phase, trimming will only extend the time you are going through it. Otherwise, trim your hair when damage starts showing up. You can tell if the hair feels rough or scratchy near the ends. Once every three months may be a little too often.

Thanks again! (And I never had an akward stage that everyone here talks about..I loved all the stages of my hair growing..strange)
I have a few aswell, I don't tend to worry unless I had lots. I guess the only way to remove them is as Regardless says to trim them off with very sharp scissors.

you should get your hair trimmed every 3 months to cut off split and damaged hairs.
If you take good care of your hair (by at least not over-shampooing and using hair dryers), you shouldn't need to go in for a trim all THAT often, --- although it is true that hairstylist will tell you to do so (and even MORE often than that, --- "every six weeks", in fact)...
If I went in for a trim that often, I'd probably still be in the middle of the awkward stage, --- instead of being at belt-length, which my hair currently now is!

Thanks for this and your other message! I bought a scissors today but I'm waiting till I have more information before I do anything I might even go to the hairdressers first and then mantain it from then on myself, (I've hated going there since I was a child and I imagine stepping back into one will make me feel uneasy, but if it has to be done..) and yes those devils want you to come back as much as possible ;)
Good advice from a wise old sage with very long hair.

There is no repairing split ends. They will continue up until the entire shaft is ruined.
It is much better to trim/dust (1/8 inch) a few times a year, rather than have to take off inches a few years later.
Ask women you know with long hair who they go to for trims. Remember, you get what you pay for (It's a person's own fault if they got and pay $5 for a trim). Please get a recommendation from someone.
Look for yourself how far up the average split goes. If it's two inches, then tell the person to take of exactly 2 inches. Have them show you what two inches is (and make sure it matches YOUR two inches ;-)
All of the "split end treatments" are a bunch of bunk.
Thank you! I was just thinking about whether or not I could cut them off myself, I mean I can hold even the shortest of my hairs easily in my hands infront of me and I could always get a friend to cut any at the back that I can't reach (there aren't any I can't reach at the moment), or would this be a bad idea?
I agree that the only way to "cure" split ends is to cut off the nasty little buggers, cutting just above where the split starts (if you use the "Search & Destroy" method of removing individual split ends, which is what I do). I also agree that occasionally one might need to go to a professional hair stylist (especially if not regularly checking for splits on your own), and agree100% w/ your advise about going to a reputable professional salon, rather than going to a cheap hair stylist! But, I have never, EVER seen a split end travel all the way up to the hair root. I think that's a bit of a tall tale, similar to Paul Bunyan and his Ox, Blue (lol) --- although I have most certainly seen splits as long as over 2 inches (and in some cases, split multiple times).
If split ends are not removed, hair increases in getting snagged, snarled, and ripped or torn whenever a comb or brush is run through it. By just trimming off the final inch every once in awhile (in my case, the longest I have ever gone without a professional trim was 3 years), the incredible improvement in texture is well worth it. When a comb effortlessly glides through your hair, the ends feel soft, instead of dry & scratchy, you know the value of removing splits is well worth every bit of paying that $$!!!
