I'm in the process of growing out my hair again and was wondering if I can maintain the "undercut" look with about 1 to 1 1/2" up the sides and back while growing the rest of the hair out and not cutting it. Just go every month or so to get the sides and back cleaned up for maintenace sake and grow the rest out and I guess eventually over the undercut sides and back. My question is, is this usually the way people maintain an undercut? I guess it would be easier to have it long and then undercut it but I've had it long and I'd like to try the undercut style for the sides and back and grow it out from there. I know I've read some threads before especially by Beanz who I believe sports this kind of style or did at one time.
Thanks, Woodman
An undercut, as best as I can figure out how to descrbe it, is if you tucked all your long hair under a baseball cap, --- and then shaved off anything visible around the ears or in back that was showing below the hat.... (I know, I can't figure out why guys would want to do that, either - lol)
Think of it as a mullet hairstyle, --- only short on different parts of the head!

i had an undercut for years, its nice in the summer and looks neat and also is good for people with thick hair too. although now i prefer growing it all out. just keep shaving it underneath and let the top stuff grow if its the style you want. you can get an undercut when your hair is at least to eye length and shaving it underneath, i find an inch and a half above the ears is high enough.
I started with a completely shaved head and grew out a mohawk starting in november 06. I let it grow out like that for about a year untill I decided to let the sides grow in this past november. I will say that it made the awkward stage a lot easier because by then the hair from the top covered the sides which hid a lot of the "poofyness". I usualy wear a bandanna to keep the sides in check and pull the mohawk out. I do at most times wish I had just let it all grow in naturaly because I now have a strip of hair in the middle that is 20 months old and the sides are 8 months. If i had just let it grow i would have hair down to my shoulders atleast, so it looks like I have atleast another year until I can put everything in a tail. It seems there is no easy way to cheat the awkward stage. If you eventualy want to have long hair all around, just let it all grow now and get it over with.
