Hi everyone,
I've been reading the board for almost two months, but post here for the first time.
I would like to get some advice from you. I've been considering growing long hair for a few years, and decided to do it only recently.
I didn't know about this board yet that time, so I asked a few barbers (a huge mistake?) for their advice. Most of them said that my hair is very thick and curly so it won't end up any good, and suggested a "nice short cut" instead. Yet one of them suggested to trim it with the "thinning scissors", which cut only part of the hair, to make it less thick, and I agreed.
Now I realized that it was wrong to do such a cut, as now the shorter hairs stick out all over the head, and the overall look isn't good at all.
So, I'd like to ask you a few questions. First, will there be anything good of my hair, or should I give up the idea of growing long hair at all? And if there will, then what should I do right now, either go to the barber again to make all the hairs the same length or simply wait for some time?
I've taken some photos so you can see what's wrong. One of them is a bit blurry, so if you need, I can post a better one.
Thank you in advance, and sorry for my bad English - it's not my native language.
Vladimir
Of course you should grow your hair :) I would shave it all off and start over with all the same lenght..but I'm sure other people will have better advice
Well, then let's wait for what the other people will say. I guess most of them are sleeping right now. I forgot to check the time while I was posting :)
I don't see anything wrong with your hair, and I think you should just grow it out,and after you have it about shoulder length, try relaxing or hydratating it in a salon, but do not let 'em straighten it,cause it will look terrible. You may also try different set of shampoos and conditioners that work well for your type of hair,I would suggest oil-repairing ones. You may also try out some hair serum or leave-in conditioners,as they work really well for frizzy, curly types of hair.Hats are also a good idea while you're in awkward stage.Good luck!:)
Hi Vladimir,
First of all, I would like to welcome you to the hyperboard, and I am glad that you have found our community. Also, there is no need to apologize for your English, and in my opinion, you write clearly, and your command of the English language is excellent.
There is nothing wrong with your hair at all, so keep it growing. The best advice is to ignore the advice of these barbers who have no interest in long hair at all. Also, you should avoid layered cuts, since they only make to awkward phase more difficult to deal with. The one length look is always best.
Welcome to our community!
David
Thank you. Unfortunately, I found it the same day I got my last haircut. If only I have found it a few hours before...
If so, then I'm not going to have any cuts, whether layered or not, at least if the near future.
Thank you for the advice,
Vladimir
Welcome Vladimir
The best thing you could do right now is leave your hair alone. DO NOT cut it or start over. Let it grow and with given time, it'll regain it's thickness and even itself out again. Also, do not get discouraged by your hairs curliness. It is possible to achieve long curly hair. The trick is to stop cutting it and to have patience. As the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait"
Long hair is definitely one of them.
Good luck
Thank you, I won't cut it then.
Hi Vladimir,
First of all, WELCOME to MLHH!
Secondly, as others have already spoken, there is no reason you can't have long hair, --- in fact, in my opinion, long curly hair looks the coolest of all (ESPECIALLY if it's thick & full, as yours most definitely is)!!!
And, last but not least, regarding thinning scissors: when I was 19, I made the same mistake myself (because of listening to the advise of a barber who said my hair was too thick, and suggested thinning it)... And I have never, EVER forgotten how much I hated that haircut!!!!
I agree with what the others below have already said: just let it grow for now. At such a point in time when/if you really want to go have your hair professionally trimmed and/or re-shaped a bit (to remove the damage that the thinning shears have done), I suggest you NOT go to a typical barber; but, instead, go to what is called a, "hair-stylist", --- the salons they work in are usually way more expensive; but, they are worth paying the extra $$ money for!! Better yet, see if you can find a stylist who specializes in long hair, and/or has a longhair following. Ask longhaired women, if you don't know any longhaired men you feel comfortable approaching with that question. Also, the larger the city, the more you'll probably be able to find a really good salon that will listen to you and will do exactly as you request..
My best to you, --- and happy growing!

Thank you all for your support, I didn't expect to get so many responses so fast.
Well, that was the main thing I wanted to know. Then let's see how it ends up. If you like, I will post updates here every few months.
It seems that I won't either. At least I hope I won't make such mistakes again in the future.
Thank you for the advice, I'll definitely follow it.
... I will ask you again, if you don't mind. This isn't going to happen soon enough.
I suppose this is right, but can how you know whether a salon is good or not without having a trim there or asking somebody who had?
Thanks. The same to you!
Vladimir
To grow out your hair, you must just give it time and let it grow. You will then go through what the MLHH users call an awkward phase, where your hair can easily become messy. To go through this phase quickly, do not get a trim; it will only prolong the stage. When it becomes long enough, gravity will start pulling down on your hair, making it a bit straighter, and less likely to fly around. Just stay away from scissors and barbers.

Thanks for your advice. I've read everything I could find on this site, so I was just asking about this specific issue.
Vladimir welcome to mlhh. Luckily you found us and now you can grow your hair with the right advice. I don't have anything more to tell you as everyone has given you good advice already. I wish you well on your hair journey and look forward to updates and any more questions you have.
Thick hair looks great long but can be annoying in the awkward stage.
Kevin
Thank you anyway. I hope I'll have the patience to go through the awkward stage without touching it.
Vladimir
Hi Vladimir !
Never too thick :) The better way to have long hair is to let it grow. Hope you'll do it !
Welcome here by the way.
Vivien
Welcome to the board man!!! Damn I hate barbers. All the other brothers gave good advice. The next time you get close to a pair of scissors you should be like two years older. And they should be for cutting paper.
I surely wouldn't beat myself up about going to a Barber at this point for how did you know? And of Barbers, sometimes I almost think they cannot think beyond an inch or two.
But has been said and so true, just let your hair grow. Forget the thought of "even-ups." In time your hair WILL even itself out and you will have great looking long hair.
Welcome, and glad you have found us.
Keep it growin! :-)
Welcome Vladimir and the best of luck with your
hair farming adventures!
peace, jonalbear
Thank you all for your support! I'll ask here again if I have any questions, and I suppose I should post an update in a few months?
Vladimir
Grow your hair out longer and then go to the salon and tell them you want your hair "relaxed" this will make it straight for 8 months.
Hi there and glad you found outr community. Your off to a good start and you hair looks very thick and thick longhair looks great.
Good luck and keep it growing.
Cheers,
John.B
Thank you, I've been told exactly the opposite.
Vladimir,
you have great hair but it's going to take time to grow them.
Thinning scissors should not be used.
