Hi everybody. As you know I am one to just let my hair grow and not ask many questions. However I have one now and it is probably stupid, but its the first time I have come across it. It gets a bit warm where I work, and I have long enough hair in the back for a small ponytail(I wear a hat when like this so I don't look like a dork!) I am not very good a putting it up yet, so I have been having a girl at work do it. My question is, is it harmful if the hair is pulled really tight? Because let me tell you she pulls it REALLY tight.LoL I don't seem to have any breakage when I take it down, but just curious. Sorry in advance if this seems silly, but I feel I am allowed a silly one once in a blue moon.Hahahahahaha Brian
Hi,
First to answer your question, I think a tight ponytail isn't very good for your hair because it pulls on your roots.
Secondly I don't like the feeling of a really tight tail, when I'm finished I always make it a little less tight.
My tail isn't very big yet but I didn't have any problem at all making a tail after a few tries I got the hang of it.
1-Just gather all your hair in your hands, I always change hands until I'm satisfied.
2-Then I hold the hair with one hand and put the tie around my fingers (no tumb so it doesn't roll to far)
3-Then I grab my hair with the hand with the tie and with my other hand it pull the tie around the hair.
4-Then twist the tie and repear 3 (put your fingers through the tie and grab your hair)
With some practice this should be no problem.
I hope my explanation was clear, english is not my native language.
btw, I saw you last update, you've come a long way.
One more tip I forgot to include, tilt your head back to make it easier to gather your hair. It's already in the right place that way.
Brian you're better off NOT pulling it tight. Wearing it tight can and often results in traction balding where the hairline slowly recedes due to hair being pulled from tight tails/buns. I advise as many other will to wear it in a loose/low tail. If you are not at that length point yet, don't sacrifice it, wait until you can wear it so it's not so tight; waiting will pay off in the long run even if it's unconfortable to wear it down. On the other hand you can do a half tail, where you grab the front hair and tie it up high which will enable you to keep your hair outa your face without a tight tail...though that "look" may or may not be for you. Bottom line, DON'T wear a tight tail! lol. Take care and it's certainly not a silly concern hehe.

TIGHT is never good...well, ummm...anyway, NOT for hair it isn't.
She must be pulling it tightly because your hair isn't long enough yet.
(when your hair is long, even a loose tie will work).
My advice would be to move the tail UP a bit higher OR use 2 ties (one over the other.
Good Luck!
It seems as if Luckskind is the best pro of all at hitting the nail on the head. His advice is ever so sound and he has helped so many. One can hardly go wrong with his advice. Thanks Luckskind for all of the help and encourgement you have given so many guys over a period of many years.
Yes that's right; I went through the same thing. It's yet another problem that is solved in time by length. In another 9 months or so, this one will go away from my experience.
