The short and sweet of it. My hair is more or less as described in the title. Thick, curly, and dry. I've tried to grow it out several times but it always ends up being a rather nasty afro like thing that is anything but what I want. Does anyone have any tips, ideas, or help for taming my hair enough to grow it out long and keep it looking nice. Replies to here or to my email would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Fernin (ferninwolf@yahoo.com)

The key to growing curly hair is patience. It demands even more patience than growing straight hair, just because curly hair takes longer to look long and it is a little more difficult to deal with at times. You will just have to resign yourself to stick it out for a year or two if you really want it long. It will get big and grow out before it grows down. It will look like an afro at times. But as it gains sufficient length, it will begin to look like you have in mind. Mr. Crow here has very curly hair like yours and he has endured all the way to awesomeness. As far as the dryness, go ahead and start using plenty of conditioner and leave-in conditioner now. Don't comb your hair dry and don't over-wash it as the less oily it is, the dryer it will be. Don't even think about brushing it. Look through the user's directory and you will see a fair amount of curly hair that looks great grown out. Mr. Crow, Bodhi, Chris H, Bill, Fallen Angels, Neil all immediately come to mind.
Good luck.
My hair was similar to yours in this pic

Matt B.: Thanks for the heads up, and stick with it I shall. (looked at some of the others and Neil's in particular is quite awesome). I'm curious if there are any particular conditioners or shampoos that any of you guys recommend as well as where to get them. Further more any gels or similar I can use to slick it down when I'm at work since my boss says my hair needs to be kept down and that anything afroish is "unacceptable".
L'Oreal Melting Gel is pretty good and I used to use it at shorter lengths. I found it not to be damaging. Luckskind here who has lots longer hair than me swears by the stuff.
No easy way to do it, but I've a few tips you may find helpful.
Best of luck as you start your growth and stick it out.
Welcome aboard!

Again, my thanks guys for all the info, and I must now leave one last question. Are there any particular shampoos or conditioners that you recommend? Just to make sure, you knows.
