Hello everyone.
I don't know if anyone else comes across it but Every once in a while, I'll be out in public or walking around in public and it seems to me ill come across a guy with short hair or a group of guys with short hair and they always give me a weird look or the stare. Has anyone else come across this situation? Is it that my long hair gives me that intimidation look to me. Or i'll come across a younger kid thats like 12 or 13 with like a short crew cut, they always stare at me also. The most i get is looks and stares. i get few that actually say "hey buddy, get a haircut."
Also is there anyone in here into any viking/pagan metal? That's all i've been listening to lately and I wonder if anyone else enjoys it like I do.
Take care
-Jøe
What area are you from? That may have something to do with it. I personally haven't had but 1 bad comment in 3 1/2 years. And that was "dude what's wrong with your hair?" during the awkward stage.
I love Pagan/Folk Metal! I went to the Paganfest about two months ago and saw the great bands Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani and Tyr!
Hi Joe, you're not alone. I get the same looks and comments. They're just brain washed into thinking it's unusual for a man to have long hair.
Yes, I love Viking/Pagan Metal.
I used to get a lot of those comments, before my very big trim (what I like to refer to it as now :]). I actually had a guy with a buzzed head call me a "long haired faggot".
Just proves how manners escape through short hair :]. Just don't worry about them, they're usually jealous because they don't have long flowing hair like we do.
And yes, I am a sucker for Enslaved and Tyr :]. A little Ensiferum, too.
I cherish these weird looks.....
I wear tie-die all the time(have boon for a few years) and have long hair. I dont look like I do because of these looks, they are just a side-effect that I have made the best of. I also have afriend who is with me pretty much with me all the time who has a handlebar mustach, a 6 inch long growth on his chin that is about around as a quarter and has long hair (go figure those Philosophy doctors lol)..so we tend to get a lot of interresting looks here in Baton Rouge, La.
Cherish those looks and make sure to project a positive image as to bring the overall attitude towards longhairs up....fight the good fight my friend.
peace

Yes, but I am used to people giving me weird looks. Even if I didn't have long hair I would get them though. I wear mascara, lip gloss, have long painted fingernails, and dress in the gothic fashion and wear some stuff many would ridicule a guy for wearing.
Although, nobody has ever actually said anything negative to me about my hair. At least not to my face :D
Oh, and I've decided on a goal length... my waist! ^_^
As for me, I usually do not pay attention to other people when I am out in public. Usually, it is when they say something that grab my attention, and that is usually rare. I do not remember hearing the public telling me to get a haircut, but there are a few people from Special Olympics that joked around about me getting a haircut. Like I said in the other post, there was a group of young people that actually liked my hair. Usually, comments from the public are usually positive towards my hair. Negative stuff usually come from my family and friends. It is not just you, Joe.
I am not a big fan of metal music anyway, especially death metal. I don't know about pegan metal.

Hi Jøe,
Several months ago I joined a new gym after tiring of my old one and I guess it was apparent that my hair was longer than any guys hair and most women as well who used the place. So at times I could almost feel the stares burning on my skin as obviously thats what they noticed odd about me.I never heard any comments due to the fact that I wear an ipod all the time during my workouts so if anything is said I would not hear it.Whats funny is the buzzed haired muscle heads who look like a bunch of Marines look at me like I'm from outer space!LOL.Guess they can't get used to a guy who's hair is past their weight lifting belt.I tend to flip my hair a lot too during workouts if I need to move it from my front to back or vice versa.Oh well I like being different:)

I've never really noticed a lot of stares by people. I think the popularity of bands like Dragonforce is making people think that long hair makes you awesome. As for Viking and Pagan metal I love it. Bathory is one of my all time favorite bands. I also just saw Paganfest a month or so ago. Great stuff.
I occasionally get a look of disgust from a stranger. It really depresses me. They're usually "Betty Home-maker" ladies with floral dresses and football helmet hairsprayed hair. So, I can easily send the disgust back to them.

Haha I mostly get stares from parents rather than other kids. Whenever my band and I go out somewhere as a group, we get constant stares from all the senior citizens.
Maybe every once in a while from a little kid who's never seen long hair on a guy before, but other than that nah.
As far as Viking/pagan metal goes, it's great stuff. I also went to Paganfest, as a few other guys here did. A few bands I like from that genre are Ensiferum, Folk Earth, Enslaved, Amon Amarth...they're worth checking out. There's a bunch more I can name but they're more folk metal than Viking.

It is always the younger kids at my school who stare at me, while the older ones usually sarcasticly compliment me.
'Hey, nice hair Dave, wish I looked like that. NOT.' Kind of thing.
Today, 2 cars full of shaven headed young men stopped as i was on a zebra crossing, and some lad leaned out and said the classic.
'Get a F'in haircut.'
Don't those comments make you want to rip the person from their car and beat them with great ferocity?
A good thing to say would be "Why? So I can look like you?" then laugh :D
That's normal, you learn to live with these arguments as you grow your hair, and keep in mind that many times they just do it because they're jealous of your hair.
Every once in awhile I get stared at, too, --- BUT, usually with a surprisingly positive ending (like: "I was just noticing your hair... I sure wish I could grow mine out that long!")...
True, sometimes the people that are staring can't stand the sight of something "different"; but, consider also the fact that, if your hair is in good condition (as yours definitely appears to be), that they actually might be staring IN ADMIRATION... No, I'm not kidding! Most people don't have the guts to open their mouth and make a comment, one way or another (regardless of whether they like what they see, or NOT), --- so, I choose to believe that they are admiring my hair if they stare and say nothing!
Until we have the capability ot being able to mind-read the public, I've decided to choose that someone is staring at me for a positive, rather than a negative reason; but, then again I live in San Francisco, --- a city that's famous for having a LOT weirder-looking people than me!

The stares i get are usually from young children, they obviously arn't used to seing a guy with longhair so it comes as a shock to them i guess lol.
