Hello all, my name's Calvin, but call me Cloudy. I'm pretty young to be in this group, but even though I live in Alaska, I get lots of discrimination for my hair and I could use the support.
Well anyways, my question's kind of vague and it's probably been asked over and over, but what's the best way to strengthen your hair and scalp? I've just been having some paranoia recently that my hair's thinning even though I'm just 14, I don't wear ponytails or braids, and its thick, but I want to be safe anyways.
Well there's a pic to help introduce myself. I don't have a picture of my face, but hey, it's the hair that matters.
Hi Cloudy and a big welcome to the mlhh!Certainly your not too young to be here as we have users from all age groups so you are certainly welcome to use the board:)
First of all your hair looks fantastic and in great condition from what I can tell from your photo. My own hair is straight and fine just like yours and I too may shed some hairs but at 46 I still have a full head of hair.I don't really think you have anything to worry about as long as you don't do anything that might damage your hair such as dying it or applying any other nasty chemicals.Just do the normal washing and conditioning and you should be fine and avoid unnecessary trimming.
Oh btw whats your goal for length?I always recommend at least waist length but thats just me:)Anyway Cloudy thanks for posting and please do post again.Your pic looks great and yes its the hair that matters.Have a great day up there in Alaska:)
Mark
Yeah I'm going for waist length, maybe a bit longer. I've always seen men with long hair as role models, Tommy from the Power Rangers who had a pony tail was an early role model in my childhood. I remember one Christmas I even asked Santa for a ponytail :).
The funny thing is though, I grew it out purely by accident. Starting from when I was 12, every month my parents would tell me to get a haircut, but I'd tell them I was at my ideal length and I'd trim it next month. Eventually it was down to my shoulders and my parents bought me conditioner, and stopped noticing my hair.
And yes, I do get discrimination even here in the rugged Alaska. I think it's simply that long hair on men is just appearing in my age group. When most girls stop telling me to get a haircut they start talking about how they want my hair.
Most of my friends barely notice my hair, and when they talk about it it's simply complimentary. The other day my best who I've known for 8 years mentioned that his mom wants him to get a haircut, and he's not getting one until it's about my length. That sure caught me by surprise.
Well enough about me, I've started taking multi vitamins and eating a hard boiled egg everyday.
P.S. I just found out how to properly comb my hair the other day
Hey Cloudy,
Welcome to the board. First off I must say you have one of the best manes I've ever seen...seriously. You have achieved great length so far and it's VERY shiny and healthy looking and shows great care; your ends are fantastic, no sign of terminal length so you should be able to add a few FEET if you desire lol.
Anyway, at your age I wouldnt worry about thinning as it's unusual in a 14 year old. Plus your hair is QUITE thick from what I can tell. For most men, as you age, your hair might become a little thinner and your hairline may rise a tiny bit, but that is no reflection of balding; more or less maturing.
As for hair strengthening, I would suggest trying a good shampoo/cond like Aussie "Hair Insurance" and simply continue to take good care of it. I also take a Biotin supplement which has helped tremendously with the condition of my hair, it's by Nature's Bounty and you get like 100 tablets for $5. However, if you want to try those check with your parents first.
Welcome again Cloudy and thanks for sharing your photo; killer hair man!
-Phil

Greetings, Cloudy. Your hair looks superb. It is clear that you take very good care of it. Your hair is very thick, which probably makes girls jealous. I doubt that you have anything to worry about when it comes to thinning.
BTW, don't worry about being too young here. Our youngest users are 13 and the oldest is 73.
Scott
You hair already looks straight to me, and I believe you do not need to straighten it out. Since you are only 14, you should not worry about hair loss, as long as you take good care of it. Just let your hair grow.

Hey, Regardless
I think he spoke about strengthening, not straightening :)

Hi Cloudy; Fantastic hair for sure. You have gotten good advice from the rest. don't worry. about the hair or your age. This is one place that isn't full of a bunch of bigoted retards. You will get the support you need.
Keep it growing
Hello ! Welcome in the marvellous place :)
Superb mane, in my opinion. I don't think there's a lot of thing which can strengthen your hair : Better avoid the thing which can weaken the hair ! (Dying for example...) I believe Henna can make your hair stronger... As for strengthening your scalp, you can brush your hair&scalp regularly if your mane support it. I've nothing better.
Bye
Vivien
Hi Cloudy,
Thanks for stopping by and great that you could our community here. You've come to the right place for advice and support for either people growing theirs out maintaining it.
I would of though with a place like Alaska where you do get adverse temperatures and alot people do tend to grow their hair and beards to keep out the cold, I'm suprised you are getting alot of discrimination but then it happens in alot on communities.
I have to say what an excellent head of thick hair you have and looks in wonderful condition and well looked after and lovely natural colour.Great to see someone starting growing their hair out a younger age.
From the picture I would certainly say you hair looks thick and should not have and issues with thining hair. I just take care if and like I said you have a great head of hair so far. Keep it growing.
Cheers,
John.B
Welcome to the hyperboard Cloudy, one of the best places for support on the web. From what I see you have nothing to worry about, so relax and enjoy what you have. Just treat your hair well and you'll be rewarded.
Bruce
Out of this world killer great long hair Calvin. Welcome and fear not about age at all.
Guess the best way to assure the most strength for the hair is making sure you always use plenty of conditioner which is about the most helpful of all. From the looks of what you have grown, it doesn't appear that there are any major problems. No way. Something must be going right.
Hi Cloudy,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and I am so sorry to hear that you are facing discrimination on account of your hair. Your hair looks great in this photo, and as far as I can tell, you have nothing to worry about as far as your hair's condition is concerned at all.
Keep it growing,
David
Welcome to the group, Cloudy! That is some spectacular hair, and it certainly is quite thick. To answer your question, a healthy diet, rich in protein, while also well-balanced, will provide for a healthy and shiny head of hair. Use an organic shampoo, free of sulfides, as well as a good conditioner. All of this combined will have great results for you. Best of luck on continued growth, as you have achieved a wonderful length so far! =)

Hi Cloudy Welcome to mlhh. As you already have lots of good advice posted I really don't have anything to add but I wouldn't worry about hair loss at 14. You must have started growing it out very very young. It's quite rare to see that.
take care
Kevin
Welcome to the board man.Don't pay attention to those discriminating against your hair,it looks freagin spectacular.
Welcome Calvin;
Your hair is just fabulous and I am surprised that you are getting flack over it, in Alaska .....used to be a very open minded State. What part?? I lived in King Salmon for a while in the late '60s
You seem to be very gentle with your hair and it looks more than healthy, so just keep doing what you are doing and hang around this board for tips and support. (And no, you are not too young )
Thanks for Sharing

I live in Anchorage, Southeastern. It's an actual city now, so the whole Alaskan lifestyle has died out where I live. The discrimination isn't actually that bad, but at times it does get unbearable. Last week I was walking to the store alone and I passed by a group of kids about my age. I made eye contact with a couple of them and a guy said, "What's up dude?" I nodded and kept walking, but as I walked away I heard someone call me the 3 letter word for someone of different sexual preferences, which of course is irrelevant and false. Anyways, here's some before and after pictures of my hair journey:
But yeah, I do get a lot of compliments for my hair and Alaska's still a great place to be. When I'm older I'm moving to Talkeetna, where it's still very Alaskan.
Anyways, here's an actual photo of myself (I'm bad at taking close up photos of myself).
Welcome, Cloudy.
You have a great head of hair.
I have a son your age, and he also has long hair, although he has a fringe, i.e. 'bangs' in American. He got it cut short and spiky when he was 8, but has been growing it out again since he was 12.
My wife and kids all think being on a board just for long hair is weird, even though they all have long hair too!
