The reason I ask is because I wash my hair every day and I would like know if any else here also washes their hair every day. I even on more than just a rare occasion blow out my hair straight with a brush(like in the above picture) and I even flat iron it. And yet, my hair seems to keep getting better, not coarser or drier/damaged in the least bit. However, I've lurked on this board for a long time and the overwhelming majority of longhairs here are against washing your hair every day. I am puzzled by this. I understand the fear that overwashing might strip away natural oils, but I do so and so do the majority of Chinese and other Asian peoples and to my eyes at least, Asian hair is the shiniest and straightest hair of all. Do you believe its a cultural difference in hair care? For whatever reason, washing my hair every day really does appear to improve the condition of my own hair. So do any of you also wash your hair every day? And if not, what are your alternate methods of maintaining the healthy condition of your hair?
I wash my hair everyday if I remember, but sometimes I go weeks without washing it and it only gets knotty and messy. So I guess it doesn't matter for me.
The hair care routine works well for both of you great to see two wonderful heads of longhair.
Cheers,

You have to find what works best with your own hair. That may change as one's hair grows longer.
R.A.Q. List of common questions
As often as it needs it. And that differs from person to person.
I wash my hair every sunday with mild nature cosmetic or selfmade shampoo without conditioner, sometimes just with water.
Hey Eric,
Every other day usually...I wash it on workout days specifically. Usually on the in-between days I will brush it gently with a boar bristle brush to keep the hair naturally oiled/moisturized until the next wash; however my hair is a wavy texture. You have fantastic hair texture and you're right asians tend to have the shinniest hair. Now if i didn't workout every other day, I would let it go longer between washings, I would probably wash it twice a week. During the non-wash days I do not get it wet or anything. It's all about what works for you though, try experimenting.
In either case, I would go as long as you can without washing, and on non-wash days, get yourself a boar brush to drag the oils down to the tips from the roots...see how many days you an go before you dislike the look/feel of it.

I wish I could go two days or more without washing my own hair Phil, but my greasepan scalp just doesn't agree with me LOL. I only use a BB brush when I fully blow out my hair perfectly straight. And that's only because I divide my hair up in sections and only work on one small specific section at a time when I roll my hair up in the round brush. Normally, after my half-blow dry/the other half air-dry routine I just brush through my hair a few times with a wide bristled detangling paddle brush like this (click on the link).

I wash mine every day. It gets very greasy if I don't. I don't blow dry it as it dries in about a half hour, at least enough to put into a tail if I want to.
On the occasion I blow dried it I ran my fingers through it as I dried it instead of a brush so I could feel how dry it was and stop before it became charcoal.

For myself, all has settled down now to roughly once a week. (Everyone is different.) I DO remember that when my hair was very short that daily washings were a must with so much oil present. As it grew longer and at about mid-back length every 3 days seemed to do the trick, and strangly all look the best on the 2nd day. But at my present length as shown freshly washed and still a little damp, it is a once a week washing. Everyday for no more than 10 minutes in the AM is spent on finger-combing to detangle. If I went 2 days without doing this I have a very time-comsuming task on my hands that I would just as soon avoid.
Perhaps the Asian hair-type can withstand all you talk about because of its type and has a great resistance against being damaged unlike if I tried doing those things to my own hair. Only a guess.
You have fantastic hair Justin! I really wish I could have your type of hair texture(I really do think your ethnicity dictates your particular hair care) because I could then only have to wash my hair once every week instead of everyday. My scalp is like a self-oiling frying pan, two days w/o the old "shampoo twice, conditioner afterward" and you can scrap the sebum off my scalp! Asian hair must then produce more oil than the hair of other ethnicities I suppose and thus does require that amount of hair washing. And I would love to just wake up and finger detangle and go on with the rest of my day like you do. Every night(unless I'm at the gym and I shower there which is of course during the daytime) I wash my hair. I gently comb through my hair with a wide tooth comb after the conditioner is applied and then finish washing it out. If I must confess, I almost always blow-dry a little(my hair is too long&thick to air-dry in a timely fashion) but only until its no longer soaking wet, I never fully dry my hair unless I'm doing a full blowout/with the flat iron to make my already naturally straight hair perfectly straight. I have done all sorts of egg yolk, vinegar, and lemon juice rinses but I've now settled down to just the old shampoo and conditioner(I've used every brand known to man like Pantene, Herbal Essences, John Frieda, Paul Mitchell, Loreal Paris Vive Pro, and even natural oils. I've experimented with six kinds of oils(soybean oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, corn oil, olive oil and coconut oil) and whereas all of these oils offered shine, only the olive and coconut oils offered me the best moisturization. My oiling routine is very simply, I simply apply the desired oil(olive or coconut) and let it absorb into my hair for more than a hour. When the hour is up, I shampoo once only to make sure I don't wash out all the oil I just applied. I never put the oil on my scalp(it doesn't need it!), only from past my neck down to the ends so I never get the greasy hair problem. And one shampoo really is sufficient as I do wash THOROUGHLY, I put the showerhead over my head for at least eight minutes straight. If you don't already notice, I enjoy washing my hair it is the nightly activity I treat myself to(among other things lol).
At this time, I generally wash my haie once a week. Later in the week, I let my hair grease down. People say washing your hair everyday can dry out your hair. On days I don't wash my hair, I just water it down.

Well, it all depends for me. Where I live it gets really hot and muggy, so at times I have to wash daily. Especially If I had a long and sweaty day. Usually I go for about a day or two until my next wash.
I wash my hair everyday with conditioner, but only shampoo 2-3 times a week.
On a side note, it takes my hair anywhere from 1.5 - 2 hours to fully dry! And it isn't even really that long yet... back is at mid shoulder blade and sides are just starting to reach my shoulders. My hair is very thick and it has a tendency to appear somewhat shorter than it actually is.
Hello,
In general, I wash my hair once a week, because mine are quite fragile and fine and because it bother me a lot to wash it during the week (it takes time to dry !). But I think I will wash it more often this summer, because it seems that the hot temperature makes it more greasy...

Define "wash."
if you mean get it wet and rinse it: every day.
if you mean get it wet and shampoo it: once or twice a week, maybe more in real hot weather (july and august here in n. hemisphere).
Doesn't everyone wash their hair with shampoo? Or some special soap at least? I can't possibly see how just plain water alone can wash off excess sebum from your scalp/hair.
Some lucky folks don't produce as much sebum, or it doesn't bother them as much. Also, with longer hair, you can brush the oils down the length, spreading them out.
I use shampoo every other day, sometimes I'll skip another day, and do a water rinse or CO (conditioner only) on the days I don't use shampoo. I do have an oily scalp, but I'm growing out a dye job, so I have issues no matter what formulation I use. If I skip a second day, I do NOT leave the house that day, and use that day for dirty projects around the house.
I wash with shampoo and condition every day. I live in Arizona here in Phoenix in the summer it gets HOT today was 111 degrees and with my job Im outside a little bit so its sweaty city. My hair can go from clean in the morning to a sweaty oily smelly mess ny the next day so I shampoo in the morning I been using garnier fructesse long and strong formula then I condition and blow dry low till about 3/4 dry living in this heat its just neccesary.
I wash my hair every day. I can feel that it is unhealthy for my hair, but it becomes greasy very quickly especially in the front. Using lots of conditioner and occasionally applying some oils to the lower part of my hair helps controlling the damage so far.
