Hey all,
I've reached the point in my hair length where I believe it has come to the time of having to stop washing my hair every other day. I have straight, fine hair which has reached about 12 1/2 inches in length after 13 months without a trim (which Im thinking of getting before the summer is over and I go back to school). I have a rather oily scalp and I have been used to washing it every day as the oil really builds-up overnight.
A week ago I began washing my hair every other day, and on my off days all I did was rinse it in cold water and air dry as usual. I recall reading here and in other places that after a while, the scalp finds its natural balance and mine should eventually stop producing oil every night in accordance to my washing routine. My question for you guys is is how long does this process take? Tommorow (Sunday) will have marked one week and I have noticed the increase in quality and softness of my hair now that I'm not shampooing my scalp every day (not that I used much anyway). My scalp, however, is still becoming oily. How much longer can I expect to keep this up until I really notice the difference in that oil stops building up every night? And... when and if I achieve that, is it best to branch out from that and try going 2 days without washing? Or should I just forget this whole idea and stick with washing daily like I have been? Thanks a lot for any help!
I would say go with what is working for you the best.
In my case, the longer the hair became the less often it had to be washed and now I only do it weekly. When shorter there was plenty of oil.........so much so in fact that I once oiled an Antique Clock with it to see what would happen, and the clock actually ran for more than two years before the mainspring broke!
But what I find now is that oil is hardly a problem and everyday as I finger comb, now (new routine) followed by a wooden wide tooth comb and finally Boars Bristle Brush that really brings out a shine that I am not even aware of the oil not is it a problem at all.
Hope you find the same will work for you.
I wash my hair weekly. It takes me three days before my hair starts to feel a bit greasy. It takes a lot more shampoo to wash my hair nowadays since my hair is longer.
Regardless

Hey Mount Happy,
I asked the same question in an earlier post here [http://www.mlhh.org/messages/233847.html]. The responses I got also varied from person to person. Some people like me also wash their hair every day because our scalp gets oily that quickly. And others can limit themselves to just once a week. I wouldn't worry about overwashing your hair if I were you, you wash your hair less than I do and as you can see from my pic my hair is very shiny and not dry in the least bit. So if my hair can be in such great condition and I wash it daily, I'm sure your current routine which is still washing every other day is even more gentler on your hair and scalp. Again, you have to experiment for yourself how many times you need to wash your hair to keep the greasies at bay.
Wash your hair whenever you think it needs washing.
Good Luck!
Here's a thought. If you are concerned that the ends will get dry just wash the top with a small amount, and always condition after.
Yes thats what I have always done, I never wash my ends or even the mid-length of my hair, just the scalp and part.
Oh and thanks for all the responses, my main question was does the scalp really adjust and start producing less oil if I wash it every other day than it does when I wash every day?
I wash every day and it doesn't hurt my hair. it may be a little dry sometimes but nothing I can't manage. It's hard to say how long before your scalp get s adjusted everyones different and there's no real formula.
Just tweak your routine to suit you.
