From one Eric to another,
the only way to know for sure that you've reached your terminal length is if your hair stays at the same length for at least a few years or more and you haven't even trimmed it at all. That's when you know that your hair has grown to the maximum length that your genes will allow. Don't worry, your hair looks very thick and healthy the way it currently is now, you are definitely capable of growing many, many more inches of your hair.
I know what terminal length is and means. And I'm sure it's true. I just don't understand how it works. I mean, suppose your terminal length is at the waist and you cut 6 inches off. Does this mean it will grow back down the waist? How does the follicle know that the end of the hair has been trimmed? I thought hair was dead, so how could there be any stimulus going back to the root? Is this proof of God's existence :)
Sorry for rambling, I just can't figure it out.
Eric H.
Terminal is a function of time. Each hair will keep growing for X number of years. Then they stay at that point for a while (depending on genetics), then they will be shed from the root and follicle.
The hairs that were cut when they had reached the end of their cycle won't grow any more, however, there are always new hairs growing. So, there will be some that hadn't been to terminal when they were cut, and others that hadn't even gotten cut because their ends were shorter than your "trim" point, and those two types will continue to grow.
The first type probably won't make it to the terminal length, since they were already well into their life cycle. But hairs that haven't been cut WILL keep growing to the true terminal point.
