Okay, clearly I am in the minority here about trims, and if I'm out of line stating this here, a mod can delete it.
First of all, trims may not be necessary for some, but for others, they are all too needed. For people like me who had hair fried by chemicals and still need to get rid of splits, they are a necessary, yet annoying part of the job. Also, those with damage done from heat styling will still need to get a trim once in a while. I know for a fact that some of the men here use straightening tools everyday, sometimes without heat protectant (which, admittedly, only does a little to help protect it. If it could truly protect against heat, we'd be coating our firefighters suits with it). That alone would warrant a trim unless you want splits up to your ears on mid-back length hair.
Trims aren't the devil of hair growth. yes, they take time out, but if they're necessary, I'd rather get one done than have fried looking hair. It just irritates me to no end to see people telling others that trims are never necessary when, at times, they are. Sometimes it can be detrimental to not get even small microtrims because thy may split up.
And that's all I have to say on the matter.
I've always maintained if one has a compelling reason to get a trim that's fine. As we've all seen sometimes the subject gets beaten to death on the board and I think that's what gets people going. People are free to get trims but when it's been in post after post after post then a few post even more about the subject
as a wind up that's when we step in and calm things down.
Most of the time through the awkward stage the best thing is to let it grow that tends to be the consensus I've found.

A very well balanced reply, eh trimmers!
My hair is quite long now, however I am going for a little more length. I have talked to a lot of women with beautiful hair and they have all told me that I need to get the ends trimed if I want longer hair. My ends are splitting and additional growth is not likely unless I get about an inch taken off the ends. An inch or even two will make very little difference. BTW, all the women that I have talked to have been very supportive of long hair on a man and I think their advice on trims is most likely good advice.
