Can someone who knows about these things tell me if the following reasons I have heard of as causes for premature grey in hair are true? Also, is there any remedy?
1. Sleeping/lying down with wet hair
2. Being with damp hair in an airconditioned room
3. Use of blow dryers
4. Use of factory made hair oils
5. Use of gel/mousse
6. Stress/worry
7. Exposure to sun/heat
Having been a men's hair care professional for the past 20+ years, Rudy, the only excuse I can give for prematurely graying hair is genetics. Rather than search for a remedy, perhaps you can take consolation in the industry expression: "if it grays, it stays", meaning if your hair grays before you start to lose it (MPB), you aren't going to lose it. Personally, I think prematurely gray hair coupled with a young-looking complexion is a very attractive combination.
I never heard that before...."if it grays, it stays"! Sounds good to me cuz my dad's bald! Know of any articles or sites that talk about this?
How about "if it stays, it grays," meaning that hair would gray eventually. It's just a matter whether the hair will STAY around until it gets GRAY! Baldness could come before grayness, or grayness could come before baldness. It's just a matter of which comes first. I guess that you can start losing your hair at the same time that hair turns gray!
None of the above. I'm 48 years old, have lots of grey hair, have hair down to my waist, and won't touch the color. With grey hair
I look my age, without grey hair I look much too young.
As for cause, it is all genetics. All of the things you list have
nothing to do with it. As far as cures, I would not know. I'm
keeping the grey as it is.
None of the above. ;-)
It is all in the genes. I am 54 with nearly pure white hair and I have had gray-ing hair for nearly 30 years. Hair length is just now hitting my shoulders. And, BTW, beginning to get frequest compliments.
Keep on growin'...
Thanks for the replies. All of you seem to feel that genetics is the main cause with which I agree to some extent. However, do any of the above have any contribution to premature greying?
Also, with regard to genetics, neither of my parents greyed until well into their 40's. 3 of my grandparents were the same, while the other was bald at that age.
I though am 30, and having increasing greys is a bit annoying, since it stands out in my otherwise jetblack hair.
Another thing I may mention (which also prompted the original post): I have noticed quite a few hairs that are black near the root, and grey at the ends. If I was really greying I would have expected it to be the reverse.
