Hi Hairy People,
I've recently had the pleasure of discovering a new (to me) - old (to others) site that a few of you I know for sure already know about: The Beard Community! I don't know why I never checked it out before; but, now that I have, I want to encourage others here to take a look... I found the galleries section fascinating!!
I'm including an example of a beard & long hair example that inspired me to re-think over how I might want to possibly grow my beard out a bit, too. I don't know this dude; but, whoever he is, I think he looks AWESOME!!
As far as my own beard goes, I've been stuck in a rut recently... As soon as I start looking too much like "Santa", I trim it back to a short goatee, --- and yet, I'd really rather prefer something more in-between. We'll see how it goes. I doubt I'll want a terminal-length beard (you should see some of the beard pics of men that DO have their beards down to their knees, or longer!!!); but, I at least want to experiment a bit, and see if I can come up with a beard style that I like that might be a bit longer than what I'm currently used to.
It's also fun seeing pics in their galleries of people I know from here (like Oren's amazing pic of his hair & beard), --- as well as I was surprised by seeing a pic of a local dance friend of mine! I haven't yet come across any pic of Bill or Victor, and I think I remember reading that David N is registered w/ them, too; but, the pics in their galleries are A LOT!!!! --- it may take me years to look at 'em all!!
Anyway, just thought I'd also mention that since I forgot to remember the link, you can find it in our own Links section (lol)....
Now, what could possibly be hairier, and more unquestionably masculine at the same time, than having both long hair AND a big, bushy beard?? (LOL)
Happy growing!
- Ken in San Francisco
PS - I forgot to mention... thanks to: Big George, Tuckergeek, and Trolleypup, --- I appreciated reading your replies to my response to Tuckergeek's original post below. Here's some further comments:
to Big George - thanks, my friend, for the enjoyable comments, --- and yes, it is true: "great minds think alike (lol)!!
to Tuckergeek - hey, no problem about day-dreaming about motorcycles (lol), --- although I know nothing about motorcycles specifically, I did a lot of day-dreaming about plenty of other things during school myself!! Thanks for the kind compliment about my writing skills. I don't think I quite deserve it, though... The truth is: I'm just good at faking it - lol)!!
to Trolleypup - Yes, I agree w/ you (and that you agree with me, too - lol), --- the longer the length, and the more important it is to us to keep it at that length (or wishing to grow it longer), the more it seems the smart thing to do to restrain it in some way as our normal "everyday" routine. Wearing it down in public is a treat; but, unfortunately, more and more of a rare treat, --- unless i want to deal with the aftermath of a lot of nasty tangles (lol)!!
Thanks again, all three of you!!
- Ken
Check out my image there, Ken. I need to add some newer photos as my beard is even longer now.
Scott
Hi Scott,
I just checked it out, --- great pic (I especially like how you're holding your segmented tail out)!!
Thanks, Scott!

Wow looks like a gale was blowing that day!
Well, either that, or... maybe he was hiking in a similar place to where this pic of me was taken up on "Windy Hill Open Space Preserve" (lol - an appropriately named place, since it does indeed seem to be always windy there)....
Happy Breezes!

Hi Ken,
What a pleasure to hear from you, and it is a rare treat to see you posting on the hyperboard! In fact, I AM registered over at the Beard Community, but I admit that I have not posted there in well over a year, and for now, I am simply maintaining my berad at its current length.
Of course, I wish you the very best in your latest beard growing journey, and I also hope that everything is well with you.
Take care,
David
Hi David,
Cool! Do you know which gallery your pic is posted? I'd love to see it!
I have not yet really explored all that there is to offer on that Beard site (I'd like to spend more time, for example, reading their board, --- or is the Beard Board a different site?). But, from what little I checked out, I found it very enjoyable, as well as informative.
Thanks for your reply, David! Can you tell I have a day off today (lol)??
- Ken
Hi Ken,
Thank you for asking, and in fact, I don't think I am even in any "galleries" over there! I made a couple of quick introductory posts in February 2007 or so (the board IS set up differently), shortly after I joined, so I have to admit that it has been ages since I have logged in.
I hope you are having a wonderful day off! I have to admit that the day of the week doesn't matter much these days, since every day is like Saturday!
Take care,
David
(--emerging from long time absence--)
I've been on the BCBB since 2003, it's a great place!
Me on the BCBB
Thanks for the link to your great pics there, ale, --- I especially enjoyed looking at your whimsical facial expressions!!!
That's a GREAT beard & 'stache you have there... It is truly, "full of personality!" It was also fun to see some of those older pics of when your hair was a bit shorter. I like the fact that not everyone on that site just has just the same looking full-style "Santa" beard. Diversity is the secret to a fun and interesting life, --- and, to me, that includes different-looking hair and beards (YIPEE)!!
Take Care,
Ken
Thanks for the compliments Ken! Actually, my style is not much of a choice, because I can't grow a full beard and so I have this naturally shaped goatee, moustache and sideburns; but instead of shaving it all as someone would do, I enjoy what i have and wear it with pride!
Regards,
Alessandro
Hey Ken, The beard community is a great site.
mybeard.org is another good site.
peace, jonalbear
Thanks for the info, jonalbear! I will check out mybeard.com soon!
Hope you and John S are having a great Michigan summer... I'm jealous just thinking about your nearness to swimming in Lake Michigan, as I miss it from my growing up years (the ocean here in SF is waaaaaay COLDER than the lake - lol)!!
Take Care,
Ken
Ken, The site is mybeard.org (not com). Is a great site.
John and I did just go for a dip in the big lake recently.
Grand Traverse Bay that is!
peace, jonalbear
I've known about the Beard Community for soem time, but somehow my beard never seems to have as much personal significance to me as my hair, even though I very much doubt that I would ever shave off my beard, but I will cut off my hair when heck freezes over.
Hi electros,
I agree pretty much close to 100% w/ you on your sentiments here! The only time I had to shave off my beard was when a job asked me to when I was 24. I hated it! When I left that job 2 years later, I grew it back immediately. But, as far as wanting a loooooong beard goes, I'm only semi-curious and mildly interested in trying it out; however, I certainly can relate to guys who get attached to their long beards, since I'm very attached to having my hair long for the rest of my life! Funny how my emotions are intense about having my head hair long; but, not the same feelings towards my facial hair...
Thanks for the reply, --- and hope you're having a great summer!
- Ken
I think that it has to do with the music scene and other influences of that kind. We think of the bands as having long hair rather than beards. The only long beard band I can think of is ZZ Top!!!
Also, I never encountered any opposition to having a beard, although I've heard of it happening particularly in the US and to an older generation who were inspired by the beatniks. I grew up in the UK and was born in '57, so beards were a non-issue.
There was a period when beards were fashionable, perhaps in the '80s? However, it was the in thing to use a beard trimmer to keep them very short. I used to do that, but I find that if I use scissors, which involves letting it grow slightly longer, then my beard stays soft to the touch.
Theoretically my wife should prefer the softer beard, but it doesn't seem to bother her either way. My daughter, OTOH, has made it very clear that she won't date or kiss anyone with a beard!
I pretty well look the same now, although a few years older since both hair and beard have long reached terminal length.
Hi Ken, I've been thinking the same thing about letting it grow, and like you I get a little length then chicken out. But I have to admit that picture is inspiring, obviously he is a good looking dude, but my hair is not disimilar to his and maybe I could pull it off (not literally of course), so we'll see.
Thanks for posting and great to hear from you buddy,
Dave
I thought I remembered seeing this before. He's cut it all off ...
