I am 15 years old and am thinking about growing out my hair. I have extremely dry hair. It is genetic. My bro and dad have the same. My mom said it isnt the kind of hair you could grow out. It is also very thick and wavy. Should i grow it out?
Sure, give it a try and come to the board often for tips on how to care for very dry hair.....mine is also.
Good Luck and Welcome

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and by all means grow your hair! Long hair is for everyone!
Keep it growing,
David
Hmmmmm..........wonder where she got her info? We see all kinds of hair types here and despite all, when grown out I cannot think of one single example that never looked well in the end.
If you want to grow your hair out, just let it grow and put your ear plugs in for those that ridicule.
I have yet to see a monument erected to a critic.
Nah, don't listen to those guys. When I started growing my hair, several people told me it would look awful. Ironically, once it was long, EVERYBODY loved it. To this day people tell me often how beautiful my hair is, how jealous they are, etc. I just chuckle and think about how some of those people doubted my intentions in the beginning.
As for your hair being very dry, here's a remedy that worked for me...
My hair used to be constantly frizzy, and whenever I'd wash it, it'd be so dry and gross looking. Then after a few days of not washing, it would start to look great.... just as it started to feel greasy and disgusting to the touch.
Well then, in February of this year I decided to stop shampooing altogether, since I figured out that the shampoo was the cause of the dryness. Since then I've been washing my hair using diluted baking soda as a substitute for shampoo, usually once (sometimes twice) a week. It doesn't strip all of the oil, so it's still somewhat oily to the touch, but the oil doesn't build up nearly as much. It's just enough oil to keep the frizz down. Then, after using baking soda, I use diluted apple cider vinegar to balance the pH level, and it also acts as kind of a conditioner. It works really well, though at first until you get the right amount of baking soda down, your scalp may itch a little. If you're feeling up to it, give it a whirl! Good luck in your hair-growing endeavours!
Keep it real.
Dryness can be cured by cutting back on shampooing and using hair oil after washing. Thick, wavy hair is usually some of the best hair to have long. You'll likely find that many will be envious/jealous as it gets longer. Best of luck! =)

Of course you should! If you want your hair long just do it and don't listen to what other people say about it.
You definitely should. I also have thick and wavy hair, and I decided to grow out my hair as well. Just let it grow and don't worry about it.
Regardless

Go for it!!!
My mom said it isnt the kind of hair you could grow out
Like David said "Long hair is for everyone!" If you care for it and treat it well, it will turn out just fine.

Yeah, I'm guessing that when most people say someone's hair isn't right for growing out, they're really just telling that person not to grow their hair, but in a more subtle way.
Your Mother is most likely mistaken. I suggest that you grow your hair and see how you like it. You are not here by accident and I suspect that you will like it. Grow it and find yourself.
