Howdy!
I don't have an exact date for my start time. So the 18th month period is a guess.
I recently tried a neutral henna in my hair, made with lemon juice. I am pleased that there is an increased shine and smoothness, and a slight lightening due to the lemon. I recommend its use.
I've also started experimenting with the low half-tail in public. This took some courage for me because, in my opinion, I consider it to look more feminine than a full tail. I like the look from the front. Let me know your opinions.

Your hair looks super David. You have gained a lot of length now. I think the half tail looks great. Keep growing it for sure.

"Times they are a changing", like the Bob Dylan song goes. A half tail may have been considered too feminine for guys 30 years ago, but not today. A lot of hair styles that may have been considered feminine in the past are now mainstream. While hair does not have a gender, there are a few hair accessories that IMHO would not look appropriate for guys. A pink bow might be an example.
In more conservative circles, a regular ponytail won't attract any negative attention. AFAIK, long hair on men is nearly universally accepted in western cultures now.

I disagree with those who think the half tail looks feminine. As a matter of fact one of my first inspirations was Star War's Qui-Gon Jinn.....and what is more masculine than a Jedi Master ??

Thanks for the comparison to Qui-Gon Jinn. I'm extremely complimented.
The piano in the background was an inheritance from my wife's family. It's an 1865 Fischer baby grand player piano. Unfortunately the piano was in such disrepair that we had to convert it to a digital piano. Repairs would have been more expensive than the value of the restored piano, with little chance for a quality sound.
Converting an antique piano with modern technology is a great solution. As a piano technician, I understand that some, once beautiful instruments will never be functional again and the cost to complete restoration is prohibitive. I know some woodworkers who convert useless instruments (with lovely cabinets) into computer desks. Only 2200 Fischers were made in 1865, so you have something unique. Congratulations !

Hi DavidH, wow that's some nice growth for 18 months! I would like to ask you a question, please? Has your Church family excepted your growing your hair out and are you the only guy there who has? I believe my Church has mine, since I am the only guy there with long hair. Just wondering.

Yes. For the most part. There are no negative "comments" at this point. There are still a few negative reactions. But, they are few and far between. We now have four (including me) long haired men at my church (out of a congregation of about 2000 people).
In comparison to my pictures here, two are at about my length and one has hair to his waist. The latter is VERY impressive because it is VERY curly hair. So, his actual length is likely to be at his knees. All of us have been at this church for quite a while, and have become "fixtures" of the congregation. In other words, we're not planning to go anywhere else too soon. So, long story shortened, I think the rest of the people are starting to GIVE UP their negativity out of exhaustion.

Amazing!! If you could only see how green I am with envy! You're at the spot I was hoping to be at 18 mos., which was last month. But, alas, mefears I have been cursed with thin, slow-growing hair.
In my opinion your hair looks awesome both the half-tailed and not tailed ways,and it kinda gives the look of Blind Guardian hairstyle-pretty cool :o.
Wow what a great update, I have missed quite a few for a long while and your hair looks spectacular David. Really cool! I really like the half tail but I agree with you about not wanting to seem to feminine a style. But around where I live I have seen a few now. Used to be nobody did it, so its more accepted now. But loose or halftailed you have awesome hair, wear it proudly :)
