Hello, everyone. Ever wonder whats in your shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, deodorant, toothpaste, contact lens solution, and sunscreen? And how safe they are; especially the stuff you use every day? I do. What you put on your body ends up in your body through absorption and added chemicals such as penetration enhancers.
A few months ago, I stumbled upon a safety database of products and ingredients. It is called the Skin Deep Safety Database. Warning: it is highly addictive.
http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
It is very user friendly; you dont have to be a chemist. The database is free and you dont have to leave your email address, just click no thanks under the box to go to the website. You can search by product name like Aussie Moist Shampoo or ingredient like BHA.
Products are also assigned a number based on the safety (long term health effects) of the ingredients. Green 0-3 has no known health problems. Yellow 4-6 has moderate known health effects. Red 7-10 has known carcinogenic properties. A data gap is also given for how much is actually known/unknown about a chemical.
All the information comes from scientific studies which are cited, lists types of concerns, what the chemicals are, and referenced with the study or board like the National Library of Medicine. By the way, some of these ingredients are also used in our food supply.
Countries which ban an ingredient are also given. Why are some chemicals banned in Japan, Germany, Canada, and the EU because of toxicity, but are found in our U.S. products???
