This has probably been done before but I want to know which figures in your childhoods made you want to grow your hair out or at least made you hair-aware. Whether they be celebrities, people you know, or in my case movie characters.
Mine:
Tommy from Power Rangers
Conner Macleod from Highlander
Hercules (from the show not the Disney movie)
Mariner from Waterworld (I think it was longish...and yes I liked that movie lol)
Fabio (never liked him but I did know him as "te guy with long hair")
All the characters from Merlin
Robert Plant
Cloudy, For me as a kid (1950s)it was historical figures whose pictures I saw in History books. Buffalo Bill Cody, Zebulon Pike, Thomas Jefferson, Rasputin the Monk etc. Later in my teens and 20s (late 60s early 70s) it was Rock stars like George Harrison, John Mayall, Shawn Phillips and Jim Morrison.
Always a bit of fun to "imagine" what a person in the days of olde may have actually looked-like had colour photography been invented.
Don't worry, it's normal to mix me up with great historical figures.
Justin, Yes it is! Thanks for the colorization.

I have Shawn Phillip's Second Contribution on vinyl, his hair looks so damn good on the cover! I too idolize his hair.
Here they are if any one hasn't seen the LP cover before:
Hegg, I have Contribution, Second Contribution, Faces and Collaboration on vinyl. Great music and great artistic album covers. Thanks for posting the Second Contribution photos.

His hair is fantastic, just gorgeous. His hair is perfect.

I'd never heard of Shawn Phillips, so I was researching a bit online. On his home page in the FAQ section, there is mention of a serious accident involving his hair and a boat motor. How very sad, but of course it could have ended up much worse.
Check out the 4th FAQ!
MachineHead, Yes, a most unfortunate and painful accident. Didn't deter him from growing it back though. Saw him in concert recently and he is still sporting a nice long tail at 65 years old.

For me, it was my brothers, who were into metal while growing up (i was into jazz and classical music!)
i listen to pretty much everything now, but when my girlfriend suggested i grow my hair long i though yesss good idea! lol so i stopped shaving.
Well I would say your girlfriend knows her shit and 3 cheers to your brother. We here so much of the girlfriend telling them to cut it, it's nice to here it the other way around.
Kevin
The hair was THEIR creation.
Hehe Sephiroth..
For me it's basically all the heavy metal people with long hair that motivated me to get long hair, they are my idols :D
Patrick_R
I always thought they were freaks until I became one of them, haha.
I used to love wrestling as a kid so I really liked Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. More recently as I finally grew my hair out, I really like Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse's long hair as well as many other long haired members of metal bands.

Hi Cloudy!
Hey this is a great thread but I had to think back a bit as I've had longhair so long that I had a hard time remembering what or who might have inspired me.Since I started the longhair thing in the early 1980s I do recall that is when Heavy Metal began to get very popular and even mainstream for a time.I do remember how impressed I was with Bon Jovi's longhair and I really loved his first album.Never mind the rest though.LOL.So I dug up this cool pic of him back when he was a respectable longhair.Ah those were the days:)
Mark
That's Bon Jovi? Dang, I might actually start listening to him! (just his first album I guess lol)
Hey Cloudy,
Yea thats him way back in the 80s as he doesn't quite look like that now.You should listen to his self titled first album as at the time it was kind of cool.Heres another pic I found of him.
Mark
Bon Jovi's cool, i really dig his music, his latest country album was great as well:)
I wonder if that was taken in the old Sam Goody's in the Woodbridge Mall. Sure looks like it. Memories... haha!

Hey you never know as I do remember that store!I still even have some of the home audio gear I bought from there when they used to sell that stuff. That would be a Technics cassette deck and reciever. If you have a really good memory of the mall I'm sure you remember the World Imports store right next to Sam Goody. In particular the back of the store after you went through the hippy beads!LOL.
Mark
Well I've had various styles over the years and I've posted a couple of old funny pics. I can't say that anyone has influenced that and decided to grow it long for change and like I said I prefer it that way.
Cheers,
John.B
When I was a kid, my inspiration for wanting to grow out my hair came from Atreyu from the movie The Neverending Story:
Forgot about him! I don't remember the movie at all though, but I remember I thought he was really cool and the kid reading the book with the bowl cut was really annoying.
Another one is Tom Cruise in Legend. Now that I look at it his hair isn't as long as I thought it was.
John Lennon.
WAR IS OVER
If You Want It.
Great sentiment, but a minor correction.
War is over if BOTH sides want it.
If both sides want it then it wouldn't have started at all! :/
I think you're taking the points a little too literally. I believe what Mr. Lennon meant wasn't so much that an existing war was over, but that the practice of fighting wars could be over if we wanted it enough. All I was pointing out was that all sides have to want it, because it only takes one side to start a fight, even if nobody else wants one.
Well he's pusing up the daisies now and probably does not care a damm!
Can't think of any one person or group that inspired me. It was more of a general appreciation of long hair.
When I was around 9 yrs. old, I've seen David Cassidy in 'The Partridge Family'. Thias was the first time I admired long hair on a guy. It was beautiful and it made him so different from other guys....
