And honestly I can't see a difference other than an decrease in shedding (which is definitely a positive). I was a bit worried about not shampooing, but just showering is enough cleaning. Basically, my routine is:
1. I wake up with bed hair and shower (not applying anything at all to my hair)
2. I wait for my hair to dry and not brush it at all. It's total knotted mess and I go outside with it a lot.
3. When it's pretty dry a couple hours later I take my trusty brush and carefully comb my hair. There's little resistance and shedding, and in about 3 minutes my hair looks silky smooth.
4. I walk a few miles on the treadmill. I barely sweat or anything, but for some reason when I get off my hair feels a lot fluffier and thicker.
So that's my routine. The conditioner and shampoo brands I've tried are Equate, Aussie, Pantene, and more and not a single thing happens to my hair other than feeling slightly knottier and more shedding.
So is my hair magic or is something wrong with it?
Consider yourself blessed, Cloudy. This routine works only on my very curly beard. It does not work on my hair, which is a lot straighter than my beard. I tried 3 times to go water only on my hair, and all were failures. The oil on my hair is too thick and abundant to rinse with water only, even when it is as hot as I can stand it.

Hello scot !
Forgive my rudness, but I got a question for you..
My beard is exactly like you even though its not long but its curly and I have wavy hair, and I remmber once my father told me that if I even shaved my beard with a blade my beard hair will turn into curly, so im wondring is that true ? because I did shaved my beard with a blade once but I dont remmber if my beard was curly or straight..
What you do with your beard hairs will have nothing to do at all with future growth. You can't make future growth curlier, and you can't make it coarser (an old wives' tale) either. If you have a completely shaven face, what you get when you quit shaving is a clean slate. The new hair will be created without any input whatsoever from what you have done to your beard before.
I have had other hair changes through the years. When I was 2-4 years old, my hair was blond and curly. As a teen it got black and straight. Then over the years it just got curlier and curlier, until in my 30s and 40s it was almost like an afro. After that the curls relaxed and I'd call it "large diameter corkscrews". Then between age 58 and 61 my hair became straight, including my beard.
If the nature of your beard or mane new growth changes, this is not due to anything you have done to your hair. It is due to genetics.
Bill
I will add here that the shape of a hair follicle determines whether a hair is straight or curly. A straight hair follicle produces a straight hair. A slightly curved follicle produces a wavy hair. A significantly curved hair follicle produces a curly hair.
Hair follicles can change shape over the years. In your case Bill, your follicles have recently changed from curved to straight. Biochemical and hormonal changes are probably why. Also, I have heard it said that all the cells in our bodies are replaced every 7 years. (Except for brain cells.)
Scott
Thanks to the both of you Scott and Bill for the information.
And God bless.
Can you show us a picture of your hair?
--Tom
Unfortunately not. Somehow my home has been rendered camera-less.
And also unfortunately, the thieves who did the dastardly deed also stole all the cameras and cell phones in his whole damn town, so he can't ask any of his friends or neighbors to take a picture of him either.
Bill
I've heard these stories before but never believed them.
Think I'll bury my camera in the back yard so they'll never
find it.
Kevin
Quite the contrary good sir, the females in my household took all the cameras for a trip, and getting a friend's camera to take a picture of your hair is more embarassing than you think. At least in my town. Plus I really don't need a picture, I mean come on, I have magic hair. I'm worried now that your guys' input may have jynxed it.
Well I'll tell you what when the Females return you can take a
picture and post it and that will show them, shut em for good eh?
In the mean time I'll cast a few charms to ward off the evil
hair demons.
I'll look forward to your putting them in their place.
Kevin
Welcome to water only :D I've done water only over a year, and its great ! What I learned you sometimes need to apply "conditioner" to it, and as conditioner I use diluted apple-vinegar rinse, makes your hairs very smoooth and easyer to manage.

Nope it's magic and I can't see!
Hey Cloudy, thanks to the advice that I've read here on this site, I've learned that I can go longer between washing and the earth doesn't stop turning! I say, what ever works.
Bruce
(Your hair is not magic. If it was, you'd have the length you want by just snapping your fingers!)
Just wait.... the shedding will increase exponentially at some point if you're not cleaning your scalp.
Plus, that's just unsanitary to not wash your scalp and hair. (Not to mention the probably smell.)
Forget shampooint with the detergents. But I say keep using conditioner.
I use conditioner, and comb my hair free from tangles, even using a commercial de-tangler if necessary, and let dry.
I would be careful without some conditioner.
