I have not been around for awhile so I attached an older picture (add 4 ? inches). My hair has always been healthy, some breakage, maybe more than normal I am not sure but still pretty thick. I am going on 4 years (Sept.). Now I am having problems. On top of the breakage I am loosing full length hairs, many a day, more than ever. They finger comb out or are in my restraints when I take them off.
Couple questions. I wash every day, I am thinking about going every other day ? And 2 is about stress. Can that make your hair "fall" out ?
Hi Darren,
First you have a thick healthy head of hair so I wouldn't get
too worried about more than normal shedding just yet. Stress
can cause health related issues but as for increased shedding I
can't say for sure.
The human hair has a lifespan of anywhere between 5 and 6 years
give or take, so it's natural for them to fall out and new ones
to start growing. Bills link On Being a longhair talks about
this. Try washing every other day and see what happens. In the
end it's all down to genetics and not much we can do about that
except drugs and they only help a little.
The only issue I have with my shedding which gets worse in the
Autumn is they get wound around the vacume cleaner brush making
vacuming a bigger chore than I would like.
Let us know how it goes
This is happening to me too. I have had record shedding. Here is 910 milligrams of hair from just one washing. By weighing it, I can keep track of how much I shed. I estimate that 80% of it is recoverable, and 20% gets lost and never gets weighed.
Your mane is fantastic, just lovely. I see your mane is in a state of flux, going from curly to straight. Are most of your full length shed hairs curly rather than straight? That might explain it. Another possibility is the time of year.
Also try to wash a lot less often. If it is at all possible, try to reduce to twice a week, or if conditions allow, even once per week.

Could be a Thyroid problem.
Hi Daren,
You are blessed with a fabulous thick and wavy/curly mane, and that is amazing growth for only 4 years, much higher than average!
About the braekage/shedding issue, I know that shedding increases for some people depending on the time of year, and you might be going through a "shedding cycle" right now. Increased breakage could be related to how dry your hair is, and daily washing might be removing too much of the natural oils in your hair, causing your strands to braek more easily. Scott has given you excellent advice to try reducing the frequency of washing.
Keep it growing,
David
Stress can definitely make your hair fall out Daren. It happens to other mamals, so why not to human beings. What kind of stress are you experiencing, or is it something personal?
