I'm starting up Ninjutsu classes next Thursday as they're holding them in a place near my school and I'm really interested in that kind of stuff, the problem is what do I do with my hair? I haven't played any sports aside from just messing about with friends since I started growing my hair and when I tie it back it just slips out when I move about and when I tried putting it up in a bun it falls down after awhile (I may not be doing the bun correctly).
I'm sure some of you guys do martial arts or some form of self defence, if you guys could shed some light on what you do I'd be really appreciative!
And my hair is about 34" long
Maybe you can trie to braid it, or isn't that out of the way enough?
Don't know how to make a bun, but I think that could be an option.
Maybe someone else can explain how to do one.
Yeah I really wish I could do a good bun that would stay up, this is where I learned from

Anyone have further tips that aren't in this video?
Just use gel on those hairs that come out of the tail, and it shouldn't be a problem. Although, I can jog with a ponytail without gel and it never becomes too much of a problem for me, so maybe you need to tie your tails better? Or try segmented tails.
You're right, I tie my hair back very loose usually but even when I tie it back fairly tight it falls out eventually, so either there is a method to tieing hair back that I've missed out on the past 3 years or my hair has a mind of it's own XD
Is that hair gel you use just like the normal stuff that people use to spike hair up or a special type for long hair?
Well initially I used a type of spray-gel that was very easy to wash off yet held tight, but then I found out it had alcohol within it which is apparently really bad for your hair, which is when I changed to a normal gel without alcohol. Doesn't matter what gel, just check the ingredients first.
Thank you!!
Mostly I just tail mine for class since it's easy, but I've done a braid too, and when it was shorter I used a bandana (often with a mini-tail). Bandanas are nice for dealing with the stray hairs. You could also do asegmented tail.
Good luck!

All good ideas, I'll think about those! Thank you! :) But when you have it in a tail does that never swing around and get in the way, like in your face or get caught anywhere?
It's long enough now to smack me in the face on spinning techniques sometimes while in a tail. I've also had people step on it (rather problematic when the individual is trying to give me a hand getting up).
I guess for me it's just something that I've gotten used to.

Well, mine is a bit different form of martial art (competitive fencing), but a well-tied pony tail generally takes care of it, and a braid is even better. Of course, I'm also wearing a hood and mask while I'm fencing, so that helps.

Yeah I wish I could wear a hat or something so my tail wouldn't be swinging around but I don't think it's allowed! Thanks!
I'm a yoga teacher. I wear mine in a topknot when I teach or practice. When I'm flailing around, I'd rather have my hair up high and out of the way than sitting on my neck.
Thanks, I'll look up what a topknot is, and I agree that's why I was thinking of a bun.
With hair that long, I'd suggest a bun or a club.
For the club, tie a tail as normal and then double the hair back (or triple it) and then secure it again. You can even wrap the club to make it more secure.
Another option which I'm considering but haven't tried yet is a wrapped bun, where you make up a bun and then cover it in a square of fabric and put a tie round that.
Cool, I'm gonna practice these, thanks!!
Be careful about the length of the club though. If it's too long, and you turn your head quickly it can give your ears quite a whack.
Well, it looks like I'll have to go for a bun. The badminton season's started up again and I put my hair in a braid as usual, but it's a bit too long now and I kept whacking myself across the eyes with it if I turned too quickly. I doubled it up into a club to see if that would help and ended up going back to the loose braid as the club really hurt my ears when turning quickly.
I've always had an aversion to buns as they remind me of the old ladies in church, but if I want to carry on playing at any kind of decent standard and still have my long hair, something's got to give and I suppose I can live with wearing a bun for a few hours a week. (Assuming I can get it to stay in!)
