Hi everyone. I have been shedding a lot of hair lately. Every morning, when I comb my hair, a lot of strands come out, and it is enough to create a small pile of strands. And I get another pile of strands the next morning. The picture (not the best quality) of my hair strands I put here is only half of what I had shed this morning. I believe that shedding makes room for new, fresh hairs to grow.
I also have a few gray hairs. I hope the gray hairs is part of what I am, not what I am doing. This morning, I had pulled out a strand of hair that was normal brown color on the outer end and silver on the root end.
What do you think? Do you have similar experiences with your hair?

Hey Matthew, I would not concern myself with shedding the amount of hair you described in your post. I am somewhat shocked by the number of hairs I shed on a daily basis, but its perfectly normal.
As for the silver coloring of your strands, I know quite a few people around our age who have numerous patches of grey hair. Nothing out of the ordinary. My younger cousin had grey spots when he was in grammar school!
Peace,
Ryan
At least I am not alone. Some people comment on my gray hairs and think I am already growing old, or thinks I am having a lot of stress. Interesting to know about your cousin.

I shed about eight times more than that a day, I wouldn't worry about that, when your hair gets longer you notice the shedding more because the hair you're sheding is so long! If however you noticed an huge increase just overnight then there might be something going on, could just be going through a period when you shed alot (it happens now and then), wouldn't worry anyway!
I certainly would not worry about it as it looks less that I shred a day. Mind you could always get set of scales and a bowl!
As for the grey well welcome to my word. I've first had grey hairs on my temples when I was 16. I can't really say you can blame it in stress as I've not seen any proof of that. I would not worry about it. You got plenty of natrual colour hair there.
Cheers,
John.B
Thanks John, I agree. I would not use scales. I just throw away the pile of hairs that comes out of my head.

....are cool.....some people pay for highlights !!
Doesn't really look like you are shedding any more than normal.
Stop worrying !! It could give you gray hair ! HA!

I am not too worried. I believe that shedding makes room for fresh new hair to take place.

Sounds normal Matthew. When you have short hair, you don't notice the shedding, but its' still happening. When I first grew my hair long ten years ago, I noticed the shedding and it did concern me then. But ten years later and now that my hair is long again, I see the same shedding going on. But hey, I am not any thinner on top. (I still have the same thin spot on my crown, no different than ten years ago.)

Like what other said, when your hair gets longer, each strand is larger, so even if you shed the same amount of hair, it seems like you are shedding more hair. The strands are larger and more visible. When I used to have a cropped cut, I pretty much not noticed any shedding at all, although I shed as much then as I do now. Today, it looks like I am shedding a lot, but that's only because each strand is larger.

That is nothing to worry about, I shed a lot too and on washing days even more hair comes out.
About the grey hairs I also have some grey hairs but you don't notice it because almost all the other hairs still have color.
It's in the family over here, but I'd rather go grey then go bald!
Hi Vincent
I have a similar experience. On days I wash my hair, I have an easier time combing my hair, and more hairs come out of my head. Even with all that shedding, my hair is still full. Like you, I rather have gray hair than a bald spot.

Hi Matthew, you don't seem to be shedding much at all, although you may be shedding more than usual. I see no reason to worry.
The amount I am shedding is scary. The image shows 910 milligrams of hair shed in just one washing. I went to the doctor about it. I will be seeking additional medical help if the severe shedding does not let up soon.
Many here at MLHH are having excessive shedding this year for some reason. It may be global warming, some unusual kind of air pollution, change in the Earth's magnetic field, or radiation of some kind, I just don't know. Maybe it is something in the food or water. I am stumped as to why everyone is shedding more this year. Mayhe someone here at MLHH can resolve this mystery.
Again, Matthew, you seem to be alright from what I see.

Where's our resident longhair scientist when we need him?? [grin]
We don't need a scientist you just need to buy a bowl and a set of scales!
Interesting enough, but you also have much longer hair than me. But I am not concerned. Hopefully, it is just the summer heat (and it does not get too warm in Seattle). The air is quite clean in Seattle. I don't feel much of an effect on global warming (and the winter of 2007-08 is actually colder than usual in Seattle). There is not much UV radiation in Seattle. I also have shed a lot last summer. If the "mystery" is solved, hopefully, it is not much.

Hey Regardless. That is not "profuse shedding". We lose about 100 strands a day. You are just noticing it more because the strands are getting longer. Don't worry about gray hair. Keep it growin' and flowin'.
TLH
Thanks TLH. Yes, some people have noticed my gray hairs, and made jokes that I am getting old (which is not funny to me). My hair is still full.

Sometimes you lose a good deal of hair after a prolonged viral infection.
