I was just wondering because the last time I went to a hairdresser, he told me my hair has been split on 10 cm of its length, and I had it all cut. Now I feel my hair looks healthier but then, I'll need to wait at least 10 months, or more, to regain the old length.
Trimming - unavoidably necessary? No.
I have not had to get a single trim due to damage or anything else for that matter for the two years I've been growing. You'd think my hair would be thrashed from all the headbanging, ha ha. I think trims are only necessary when severe damage is present, and it's quite noticable. Your hair will grow back, no need to worry, just be patient and you'll pass your old length with ease.

Well said Hegg and Justin and could not have put it better myself..eh trimmers!

I think the best way to deal with split ends is to cut them indivually rather than lose months of growth to remove a few. I'll normally spend a little time each week going through my hair looking for splits and cutting them. It's time-consuming, but it's quality time spent with your hair and can be quite therapeutic in a way.
That's a very good idea to be going through them individually, but what about us people whose hair is still too short to cut ourselves and we don't trust hairdressers?
Strangely I do have quite a lot of split ends because originally I didn't used to treat the ends well before I found out about MLHH or further hair care.. and it sucks pulling the shorter bits at the back forward because they don't reach eyesight and are difficult to look at in mirrors!

Hang in there. I hunt out splits myself and was quite annoyed until I could actually get to most of my hair to check it (I say most because there will always be hairs at different points in the growth cycle that are too short bring into eyesight range). You could always have a friend/family member help you, but I was too worried about getting the "you're crazy" look to ask. ;-)

To be honest, I find that most of my splits are at the front anyway, in the hair around my face. I suppose that area sees more wear and tear.
If you've had all of the damaged ends chopped off and are now taking good care of your hair, you'll probably notice fewer split ends anyway.
There's one product by Pantene which claims to reduce the appearance of damage by sticking the splits together. It's also meant to stop the damage getting worse, so you could try that. It contains a lot of silicones, so you may not want to use it. It's one of the products about which opinion is divided on the board, but I don't think it'll do any harm to use it at least in the short term until your hair is long enough to pull round the front.
As Hegg has said, if your hair is healthy then there is no need for trims, I am at 32 months with no trimming and very little maintenance to be honest. I don't stress it, pull at it, blow dry it, straighten it, rub it with a towel, or overwash it. I believe that you can have healthy hair without hours of daily 'fiddling', and to me that makes the growing journey that much more enjoyable and stress-free.
Obviously if damage has occured then you may need a trim, but why let your hair become damaged having spent so much time in nurturing it?

Just be gentle with your hair so no damage occurs.
