I've been growing my hair since last August. It's always been very thick, but I hadn't realised how infuriating it could be until i grew it long. Unless I bombard it with hairspray (making it feel terrible and look unclean) or wear a hat (which isn't always appropriate), my hair flops uncontrollably in my face, and every time I brush it out, the slightest movement or gust of wind blows it all back into my face again.
It gets to the point that, when i dry my hair in the mornings, it is so in my face afterwards that I'm stumbling around literally blind until I grab my hat. It looks awful, dull and boring when it's flopping around too (not free and manly as Tolkien would have you believe)
When i hold the top bit back, as though it were tied to the back of my head, it looks really cool, but there is no possible way to keep it like that... is there? It's still too short to tie back, but I wonder if anyone can give me some advice, or at least assure me that it will get better.
I see some people whose hair just stays exactly where they put it, well shy of their eyes, without any effort at all. Argh. Any help is appreciated.
Try a head band or Alice band. According to this article to which I have provided a link at the bottom of the page, "Headbands...have recently become popular for men in some countries, due to a fashion for long hair. Alice bands for men have been worn by David Beckham and Ronnie O'Sullivan." Further, "A headband is a clothing accessory worn in the hair or around the forehead, usually to hold hair away from the face or eyes. Headbands generally consist of a loop of elastic material or a horseshoe-shaped piece of flexible plastic [the kind with the "teeth" in them look to work best.] or metal. They come in assorted shapes and sizes and are used for both practical and fashion purposes."
I see younger guys (<25) wearing them all the time to keep their longish hair out of their faces.
Good luck, MB
hey dude i got thick hair too and been growing it about a year and half, wot i do is after i wash my hair i put it ina beanie and let it dry like that cause its make half your hair dry straighter without it curling up or looking bad i hope this helps
I wore an Alice band to get me through the awkward stage. You could also roll up a kerchief, band it over your head and tie it at your nape, if the Alice band is too girly for you.
For a while, my hair had been getting into my eyes, so I used bobby pens to hold up my front hairs so it would not get in the way of my eyes. It is cheaper than head bands. Today, since my hair is a bit longer, I just shrug it off, and I try to walk in the direction of where the wind is coming from.

I love the feel of my hair blowing across my face, but I would recommend an Alice band as Matt said, you really don't want to be bunging lots of product in your hair and gunking it up.

Use bandanas or tie it back as best as you can and wait. No other solution.
Try to avoid using products on your hair, it will only damage your hair. Just be patience and wait till the akward stage is over and the gravity keeps the hair where you want it.
I have the same problem, although not constantly. If a headband or alice band won't work for you, then try this: take a pair of sunglasses that fit securely over your ears and flip them up on to your head. The secure fit is essential - not all sunglasses work. It gives the same effect as a headband without being...a headband, if you know what I mean. I've found that it "works" as a look for all but the most formal situations.
Hope that helps.

I have a few suggestions, hopefully they'll help you out
1. You could part it a different way, when I was growing my hair out, I would part it to the side, when it got longer i started parting it in the middle.
2. Sport head bands such as these

http://i24.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/e3/a1/c621_1.JPG (ignore the flowers on these, they're for males too :P)
3. Headgear, like beanies, hats, bandannas, and whatnot.
4. You could try just a LITTLE hair gel on your roots where the hair is bugging you, and move it to a position you would like it to be. But hair gel is different than hairspray, and if you use too much of it it will make your hair look worse. Use extra hold sport hair gel.
Hope any of these helps you :)
Best wishes, and good luck

Judd Nelson sort of flipped his hair up, try wearing it like that, maybe it'll keep out of your face.
Hope this helped too :)

Use good hair products and pull your hair through the little opening at the back of a cap. That works really good and I think it looks great too.
It sounds like you're very close to being able to tie it back. You may even be able to do a half tail (small pony tail near the top of your head with the hair at the back loose).
If you're not quite at that stage, you could try using a little gel on the roots or a mousse instead of the hairspray. Just don't use too much. It's definitely a case of less is more and if you need to add more, you can. Add too much and you'll have to either comb it out when it dries or wash your hair. Starting at the back of your head and working forwards, coat your fingers with a little product and comb the hair back a finger's width at a time so it doesn't end up all slicked back and stuck down and will have some movement to it when you're done.
There are a lot of other styling products out there such as waxes and gums which allow some movement but help to keep the beast under control. Maybe go to a stylist and ask for professional advice. They'd be able to give you ideas for different styles and also advise you on the products which are most suitable for your hair and the style you want. It's fairly expensive, but then so is buying a heap of different products just to see which works for you.
Fredrick,
Long hair is a great pleasure and self affirmation. For the first time in my long life, I am pleased that I have hair long enough to fall into my face.
But to mnanage it, I have experimented. I do not think the type of oil matters much, but I use VO-5, Coconut and Jojoba -- not all at the same time, and also almond and walnut oil which I can get at the supermarket. A little dab will do it. I also use jell.
If I must go out when my hair is wet, I make sure it is tied down.
Experiment, and you will find a way.
