"you have to at least be slim if you're a bloke with long hair". I heard that as a rather large gent with said long hair got off the bus a couple of days ago.
Mmm pot calling kettle black..lol!
"...you have to at least be slim if you're a bloke with long hair..."
Although I am overweight, I sort of agree with that comment....long hair (and cool clothes) is/are enhanced with a slim build.....
I've never heard this comment myself that I can remember but unfortunately Walter this for the most part is true but certainly there are exceptions. This might especially be true if your hair is very long such as to ones waist. As for the fashion industry its even more so true that they cater to slim individuals more than those that are not.Just look at the ads in newspapers and mags as an example.

To me, that's not a problem, since my weight falls within my normal limits. Since I build some muscle, I can have some extra weight on me and still look slim. That statement like that would not affect me as much (and I had not encountered that statement yet).
Regardless

I too have heard many a statement on a bus. Once a woman claimed that she had NOT been born..........she "Hatched!" And with that she had another sip of her "cola," or so it said on the can.
LOL
I've always gotten comments that long hair makes me look too skinny. Long hair, if it's down, makes your face look slimmer. It's the vertical stripes theory applied to hair.
Of course, everybody has an opinion that you shouldn't have long hair if you're too old, too fat, too thin, too masculine, too feminine. It's always something. I had short hair for years because it seemed more flattering to my face, which it probably was. But it didn't express me as a person.
Tell it to the Cimmerian, or any other man who's worked hard to become the right kind of big. Be as glorious as you dare.

As usual =P it's he same battle with personal opinion everyone faces on a daily basis. What's new? Why does it matter as long as it's you?

Funny thing is the older I get the less I give a shit what others think. I'm sure that's true for many others. People try and apply standards to me I turn on them and pic them apart for every little flaw I can find. Then I laugh and say "now isn't this silly".
Well some people are very shallow.

While it's certainly true that heavier folks are discriminated against, I've never heard that particular observation myself and I don't see how a great head of hair would look any less nice on a guy who is 250 lbs rather than say 165.
On the other hand, as a 5'8" guy, I've noticed that tall guys DO tend to carry off long hair with more relative ease, than an average-short guy like myself. It's only an impression, but as I've thought about it over the years I think it's probably has to do with proportionality. My $.02

I have heared this kind of comment, plus countless ones of other kinds, countless times - on my hair, on my beard, on my size, on the way I dress, you name it. There are plenty of boneheads who just can't (or don't want to) understand that people come in all sizes and shapes and that they have different preferences when it comes to hair length. In most cases I just ignore them. After 30+ years of long hair I grew a very thick hide...

Yes, the Fashion Police will then say the following as well, if the same guy loses weight: "He would look so much better if only he would cut his hair!"
The Fashion Police will also say that a guy is "too old to have long hair", or that his face is "the wrong shape for long hair"... And blah blah blah blah...
I am over-weight; but, cutting my hair won't help me lose any more than possibly a pound or 2, --- and that pound or 2 of hair is NOT worth sacrificing! The only way for me to lose body weight is for me to get more exersize, as well as eat less fatty foods. Hey, I'm working on it; but cutting my hair has NOTHING to do with getting in better shape... And I hate to tell the Fashion Police this, but: if my hair was shorter, my body would still look THE SAME (lol)!!

That's a bunch of BS! I'm a short guy and I like short guys, but I love long hair as a perk! Few people are skinny anyway. Hey, this is America! Eat all you want and be happy, but keep growing that hair!

The type of people who make comments like that will find something to comment on regardless of the person or situation, whether it's somebody's weight, height, dress sense or whatever. However, they don't like it when the critical eye and comments are directed at them.
Personally I think that's BS, Long hair improves the appearance of men skinny, fat, or muscular 99.9% of the time, personally I find skinny, and leanly muscular men most attractive (think young iggy pop), but a gorgeous mane is gorgeous no matter who its on. Though I do think being a healthy weight is a good idea, though not because of how it makes your hair look *laughs*
