I got my last haircut in late May. Since then, I figured since I finally live on my own, I can finally try growing my hair long. I'm 24, and a bit bigger (yes I've heard all the bad words about big guys with long hair), but I just think long hair looks so cool, and you gotta try everything in life at least once. Now, the problem is, I've got really poofy wavy hair. It doesn't fall down except just after I was it. I'm not too worried about it at work since they're pretty lax about that, but in general, it is pretty wild looking. I'll post a pic of me later tonight. Am I at least on the right track? And is there anything I can do to it in the meantime?
Remember that you are entering the awkward phase on hair growth. It is annoying, but you have to get through it in order to have long hair. It is tough for those with wavy or curly hair, and I also have wavy hair. Nevertheless, I am glad that you have finally decided to grow out your hair. I do hear a few bad words about me growing out my hair, but not regularly. Less than 1% of all people disagree with my hair, in fact.

Regardless, did it take you longer to grow your hair because of the waves? I worry that my hair will just keep twisting all around and never make its way down.
When my hair was around that long it was really uncontrollable as well. I picked up a jar of this non-drying hair "jelly" type stuff to slick it up and comb it straight back.
I would love to try something like in this video, but I dunno if it's work-appropriate or not...
I love the Japanese and their spiky hairstyles! ^_^
Here's my pic, as of today. It's all a mess as you can see. It appears short in the pic, but it is about 3-4 inches long. You would not beleive how much my mom was yelling at me to cut it when she came to visit over the weekend >_<
Not a mess at all. Bet you didn't know that you resemble very much the Classical German Composer "Max Reger" of the early 20th century who wrote tons of musique!
Hahahahaha! Well hopefully, once I grow the hair out long, I'll look different than Mr. Reger. Although I do look like him atm. Now you've got me checking out his musique! lol
Hi Shonrune83,
Mess? Nah, no way. Look's damn good and I think down the road in your hair journey your hair will be very impressive. By the way, I notice you have 'rune' in your name, do you by chance take interest in runes or is that a last name? Just curious.
Cheers,
Hegg
Thanks for the kind comments! :-D
Yeah, I love the runes ^_^'
Especially the ones in The 7th Saga (SNES).
At what point can the back be tied up? I bought some scunchies, but I'm not ready for those yet. What about those tiny rubber band things? At what point can I / should I start using those to keep the back hair more in check?
At about 18months you can make a full ponytail but before that time you can start making tails. At what point is up to yourself, I did it when the hair in the back was to hot and after that when it was windy outside.
I inclused a pic from my ponytail through the months to give you and idea.
You have good hair to grow long! Try using something like Garnier Fuctis Sleek and Shine leave-in conditioner. It'll help tame the poofiness without a residue.
btw, you're going to hear a lot of criticism until folks realize that you're in it for the long haul. You have to grow quite a thick skin, but it'll be worth it.

First of all welcome to the board, you've come to the right place for advise of others.
Great you decided to grow you hair, looking at the picture it doesn't look bad at all. Not to discourage you the coming months will be even harder but it's worth it so tough it out.
You can use some gel, not to much it will damage your hair.
Or you can use a bandana or hat, I use these last two a lot.
Good luck on growing your hair and keep us posted.
btw, Don't listen to what others have to say about your hair, it's your hair and your choise to grow it.
Are some gels better than others? And do you what strength hold of gel do you use?
Don't use gel myself, only in the first two months of growing when I didn't decided to grow it out yet.
I'm afraid it will damage my hair, so I just had some bad hair days in the last 10 months. In a few months it will be long enough to make a full ponytail and the worst part will be over for me.
So I can't advise you on that one, maybe other people here have some experience with it.
Hi Shonrune83, the Long Hair Journey can be exciting and it let's you know how go you are at sticking to your goal. Some family, friends and even the mirror (you may hate the way your hair looks) will try and convence you to cut it. But if you stand firm and don't cut, then around 2 years you'll have a lot longer hair and another surprise. Your wavely hair may turn into curly hair at the ends. Mine did, it's not what I pictured myself having at about 2 years, but it's what I have.
All you have to do is ASK and you can get good hair care advice and support here.
