I've lurked on this board off and on over the last few years and felt it was time I posted.
I've always wanted long hair being enamoured by the fantasy/historical/movie heroes with it. Never got very far in growing it out as my hair is unmanageable enough short. I also spent a couple years at a religious college where the rule was for men to keep their hair off their ears and collars. My last haircut was in March and I've been resisting pressure to get it cut.
It's tough slugging through the bad hair phase, but I'm hoping to finally tough it out as I'd really like to show off my curls. But already I get such a thrill whenever I shake my head feeling the swish of my hair as it bounces around.
Right now my goal is to pull off the surfer hair look though I would love to be able to wear a pony tail to show off some of those cool Celtic hair bands that are featured on the links page. I just recently bought some Redken products to help combat the poofiness and the frizz.
Hi Kronos, Welcome to the The Long Hair Adventure. Growing out wavey/curly hair can be a trip.
Welcome, kronos!
You are right about it being tough slugging it out through the bad hair phase; but, rest assured, if you keep the high goal regularly in your mind before you, you will make it! It also helps to have a sense of humor during the awkward phase, as your hair will play jokes on you pretty much every morning when you wake up!
Think of it this way: you have just embarked on a road trip journey, --- let's say it's Westward across a large continent, like North America (just in case you are American, and familiar with it - lol).... There will be rugged mountains (and narrow, terrifyingly steep roads to have to drive on in order to get over them)... There will be boringly flat, seemingly endless stretches of open, treeless plains (so boring that you'l feel tempted to just go back to where you came from)... You'll see some vistas that will take your breath away; but, conversely, you'll also probably have some moments of frustration, and maybe even feeling scared & lost in some big city at nightime, re-thinking the whole adventure and wondering if you should just "toss in the towel"...
Wherever your final destination is as your ultimate goal doesn't really matter (California? British Columbia? Alaska? Baja?... And as far as hair goes: shoulder-length? mid-back? waist-length? terminal?). What matters is that you try your best to just enjoy the ride, --- and that once you reach your goal, you will have learned A LOT about yourself, as well as learned a thing or 2 about others (both positive and negative - lol)....
Happy travelling!

Thanks so much for the encouragement and the metaphor. It'll definitely be a journey.:)
Hey there -
I've been a long-time lurker here too - and an occasional poster.
There aren't many religious colleges with that rule - and I wonder if we actually attended the same "institution." It kept me from growing hair out for years.
Was it in the South ....?
Good luck with your goal!

I also spent a couple years at a religious college where the rule was for men to keep their hair off their ears and collars.
No, it was in the North West.
Wow! I actually thought I went to the only wacko institution with a rule like that.
I'm not necessarily happy to hear there are other schools like it, but I'm strangely comforted that my experience wasn't so unique. I went to a Christian college that used the Apostle Paul's vague ranting about ancient Hebrew/Roman temple prostitution to establish haircut rules for postmodern American males.
Gotta love translation ....
Anyway - best of luck to you!
I agree with Matt that your chosen moniker of Kronos is telling.
Cheers -- and happy growing through the surfer phase and beyond!
Glad you finally "unlurked" and joined in the fun.
Judging from your starting point, I suspect you are going to have a very "challenging" awkward phase! HA! (Yeah, that's right, call it "The Surfer Look"... HA!)
Hang in there (and here). You will get lots of encouragement.
Thanks for Sharing

What a cool name you have chosen: the Greek for Saturn, sometimes conflated with "Father Time." Anyhow, you have the type of hair that looks better the longer it gets and becomes more under control the longer it gets, yet remains full of body and bounce. Good luck in the growing, and the so-called "bad hair" phase can actually be fun. You basically have a new look every month or so! Hats, headbands, bandanna, etc. can get you through this with no problems. Good luck and hope to continue to see you on the board.

Thanks for the encouragement and it's wonderful you remember your Greek mythology. Definitely good to see in your pic how polished you look with your hair.
Welcome kronos. It is true that you are going to go through the awkward phase with your hair growth. But men with long wavy or curly hair have snazzy hair (and I have wavy hair).
Regardless

Thanks, it was your pics that were a big motivator for me as it seems we have similar hair.
Welcome Kronos, your're off to a good start! Stay tough through the awkward stage and you shall be rewarded!

Welcome to the hyperboard, I wish you good luck on your journey.
You've got a great start and your hair will be awesome long.
Don't listen to the cut comments!
