I was wondering if smoking prevents hair growth? I have recently cut my hair like about a month ago to a very short style. (a 1/2) And I would like to grow it out up to my sholders.
I have no idea, but it is a very good thing I do not smoke at all. Smoking is bad for you in almost every possible ways.

I'm not entirely sure. I don't think there is conclusive evidence that it does however some researchers say that it might influence some sort of thinning or possibly hair loss. I heard that it has something to do with the shortening of blood supply therefore affects the circulation/health of your scalp.
This really is a hard call. While we know smoking is not good for one's health, there are always anecdotal cases. I am friends with a guy about my age who could be called a "chronic" smoker. This guys is out of shape and already has the worst cough; he's always sick, etc. But, he has great long hair, thick, shiny, past mid-back, much better than mine will ever be. It's a quite ridiculous situation!
I have known 1st hand of some cases of this nature during my lifetime as Matt B has described, and it sure is enough to make one wonder. On the other hand I have known the opposite where the person appears to be doing everything right, and yet their hair is in bad shape. Genetics perhaps? (About the only thing I can think of that would account for this.)
All I know is that smoking is very bad for your hair. Some doctors put premature hair loss down to smoking. It certainly doesnt help for example, my dad doesnt smoke, he still has a full head of hair at 58. However, my dads brother has smoked since he was 15 and he is now completely bald. Not good for more other important aspects of you health either.

Fortunately I've never taken up the smoking habit so I can say that not smoking doesn't slow hair growth:)

Just going back to Matt.B's post.
Smoked for 15 years and gave up in 2006...got diagnosed with lung cancer...now in remission...I'm not got doing bald...hair is looking fine! From the last update pic in August I wasn't given any negative reaction that's for sure.
I gave up smoking cold turkey and not smoked since then and yes I should have known better as I'm asthmatic. By doc says I'm very good health, average blood pressure. Okay a few pounds extra to carry but we go like our real ale and red wine! How about that smokers?
Cheers,

Compare the facial skin of a smoker to the facial skin of a non-smoker. If it does that to your face, it has to be doing something similar to your scalp. Anything that deprives tissue of oxygen kills cells, and some of those cells in your scalp are producing or lubricating your hair.
Well I'm still in the pink here and not "fagash lille"!!!
When I was in college, I had long hair and smoked. I had long hair for around 5 years, and never had any adverse reaction from smoking towards the health of my hair. I since quit smoking, and I'm in the process of growing my hair out again, and really don't notice a difference between then and now.

Smoking is bad for your health that one thing that's sure, don't know if it effect your hair growth. I'm a smoker too and I'm growing my hair out for one year and got great progress. For me it didn't effect my hair.
The only thing I've got to be carefull with is not burning my hair.
I don't know about growth rate, but longhaired smokers seem twice as stinky.
