Hello all, I'm back after my introduction awhile ago (at 3 months growing). It's been about 5 months now and unfortunately, it's gotten so annoying that I've almost gone to Great Clips TWICE today! It's great having this site to keep my spirits up though. Anyway, on to the question.
My bangs are still just barely past my eyebrows, so I swish it all to the left to keep it out of my eyes and less messy-looking. This is really hard to keep up during the day though, especially at work. it seems like if there is the slightest hint of wind my hair is going everywhere. Part of me wanting to cut my hair is that I feel like I look pretty unprofessional at work in this awkward stage. At what point can you start parting your hair to where it actually stays parted? Only after you can tuck the bangs behind your ears? Thank you all for any advice.

Hi
I started to part my hair where you're at right now. It worked great for me and the hair stayed out of my face once my hair adjusted to the new position. So, maybe try parting it now and see how things work out for you, if they don't work like you hoped, perhaps try again in another two months and see what happens there. Good luck - just don't cut it no matter what.
Cheers,
Hegg
Thanks for the reply! One more quick question: The sides of my hair reach just barely to the bottoms of my ear lobes, before getting longer towards the back. Should I stick these behind my ear rather than leave them over the ear when I try parting my hair?
*I lack a camera right now, but I'll try to get some photos here so you all know what I'm working with.
No problem! Well, I would just play around with it. Try putting them behind your ears and see if they stay in place and look okay to you. If they don't, like I said earlier, give it one month and try again. With parted hair, the only parts I moved was the top, but you can also do the sides if you would like, what ever works for you. I think they would be fine, they should stay behind your ears if they're down to your lobes now. Also, another thing that helped me keep hair in place was bobby pins, as funny as that sounds. So it's just something to look into if you are looking for other options. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!
Cheers,
Hegg
Up to you.
A 'covered ear' style can look quite good while you are growing out. Sometimes it can look like a helmet but generally it is a good way to go.
Hair gel or spray can help at this stage.
Just my $.02:
I've always been able to part my hair--but that may be because I kept my bangs when I first grew it out. I just carry a brush or comb in my car so I can brush it again on lunch break (and try to leave my car windows rolled up). I don't normally use hair spray or mousse or whatever (though I used to use mousse), but I certainly might suggest trying it.
I also shower in the morning and brush my wet hair into place; that seems to help.
--Jeff (thinking about another bang trim)
The first two months I've had it spiked like I used to wear it.
I started to part my hair almost from 2 months, I took a while before my hair settled in the new position. After that it always falls in place by itself. The bangs are the only small problem until they reach your ears. I didn't bother me I just pushed them back when needed.
Hope this helped you.
Thanks, I'll try parting it after I get out of the shower and see if it stays like that while it dries. I can part it okay when it's dry, but as soon as my head dips forward it all kind of goes back together. Not a problem really except at work, where I have to have gloves on all the time so I can't really be fussing with my hair haha.
Thanks everyone for the tips and advice, I just need to stay strong for another ~7 months haha.
Katatonic, Is there a possibility that you can wear a cap or hat at work. That helped me immensely!
peace, jonalbear
Yes, I CAN where a hat at work (I work in a Biochemistry lab) but usually it seems a) a bit unprofessional but maybe nobody cares, and b) a bit uncomfortable since it can get hot in there. I've also heard that wearing a hat all day can be detrimental to the health of your hair, is this true?
Only right after 11 months of growth was I able to *start* parting my hair (very curly hair). at first it looked awful; my hair just stuck out horizontally instead of vertically... now, 3.5 months later, it sticks down at 30-40 degrees at least, not completely horizontal. I'm hoping by the 2 year mark it will look decent with the parting (I'm soon at 15 months of growth).
Good luck until then! Try gels or hairsprays.. or mousse. I know what you mean about the hair flying around with the smallest gust of wind; I have this problem even now! When it flies back it looks cool; but at all different angles the frizz monster breaks out.
This seems like a really freaky question to me, no offence. I used to have short hair once, many decades ago, but I never had hair to short to part. Not that this is a helpful answer, just an observation!
Of course, if you are growing out from some sort of unfortunate Belsen/Auschwitz haircut, then YMMV.
Actually, thinking about it more carefully, what makes the parting stay is that you have been parting your hair for a while and the hair is 'trained' to part. So, you see it's time, not length. You were so convinced it was length that it threw me off track for a moment.
The other thing that may help to start with, is if you use something to stick the hair in place until it is trained to stay there by itself. Even water works, i.e. if you wet your hair and then comb it to where you want it, it will stay there slightly longer than if you attempt it dry. It seems to need to develop a 'memory' of being swept a particular way. Various kinds of commercial gunk will also work, and leave behind varying amounts of unpleasant stickiness, LOL!
