My mom called me up and was begging me to go to a salon and tell them to do some kind of trimming that would even everything out. Does anyone know how this works, and what I should tell the stylist? She claims they can cut my hair a little to make it less wirey, even though I am growing it.
When you just allow your hair to grow-out all by itself it evens itself out on its own and looks the best of all. To go to a salon for this in my opinion would not be a good idea. So many in the past have fallen for this "trim-even-out speel," and later regretted it.
Also, you might want to think of this angle: The hair no matter what will NEVER be exactly even due to the fact that old hairs are falling out and being replaced by new growth on a daily basis. NO Salon can solve this one.
Photo above is my own hair and it has NEVER been evened-out.
Once again your photos are a true inspiration not to get trims! Looks absolutely super that way! Very cool photo too.

Hey Hegg
Thank you ever so much for your very thoughtful and kind comment. A true gentleman you are. But speaking of inspiration, your own mane is of the greatest inspiration as well and you ARE going to make it to this length for sure! :-)
The photo shown was posted once before in early August, but I decided to post it again to show this user just what hair CAN do if allowed to grow on its own without being "evened-out."
All the best-
Justin~
ps: I DID have 3 trims along the way in 5 years, but these were to keep in check "Split-Ends." However, I lost quite a few unnecessary inches to them and now realize that a mere dusting would have done the trick. These were "trims" of the ends only. No thinning outs or even-up are needed. And when I think of it now that I have gone through all of my major yearly shedding period, the hair has automatically thined-out itself. (Just amazing what nature can do for you without resorting to the artificial.)
You're ever so welcome, my friend! Thank you! I sure hope to make it to that length.. it looks so good and healthy!
3 trims is nothing extensive in that amount of time, so I wouldn't sweat it. I would have never guessed you had any because your mane is at a wonderful length.
Have a good weekend,
Hegg
I don't think you have a single worry in the world about "not making it" to the length mine is presently at Hegg. The question is now.........where is terminal going to be for myself? Making it to the waist or even a little beyond is not really all that impossible when the hair is straighter and with the right care which I know you are giving yours.
So true. Not excessive at all in that amount of time and most guys will probably need a "dusting" every now and then when their hair reaches a very long length. (NOT thinning as I stated before. Merely a dusting only.) The trick is to make sure that the ends are still thick enough and blunt. If not, it is snag and tangle city like you wouldn't believe and the good hairs will be damaged or destroyed.
You too Hegg.
Take care.
Justin~
If you don't have any split ends it's not necesairy to do a trim.
You can grow it out for a very long time without a trim.
If you do decide a to go for a maintance cut go to a stylist you trust who doesn't cut to much.
Is it different for straight-hair guys? My hair is getting wilder by the day. Instead of going down, it's curling up on the sides and back. Is this because of "split ends"? Can someone explain split ends to me? How do I know if I have them?
Straight hair grows down itstead of to the sides. So with straight hair you notice sooner that your hair is uneven.
Your hair grows this way because you've got curly hair not because of split end. Split ends are stands of hair that split in two or more pieces at the end.
Sounds like Mom will say anything to get some length cut off your hair. Moms are like that, yeah they are. Stay away from trims and cuts. It just prolongs the journey. If she doesn't like your hair, the issue is hers not yours.
Well for me theres only one time in growing my hair that I'd get a trim. When my bangs got to about eye level, I got about 3/4 of an inch off the bottom in the back, both times I grew my hair out. I'm not saying you HAVE to do this I just prefer to have everything a little more even while its in the shorter stages. I just dont like having hair only a little past my eyes in the front while the back is hanging over my collar.
Its all a matter of preference. How long is your hair currently? Since I started growing my hair from a buzz cut, I have gotten 3 trims. The first 18 months after i started, the second a year after that, and the third 6 months after that. It was so uneven that I didn't like looking at myself in the mirror too much. It felt great after the trim. The second trim was an attempt to make it all the same length all the way around, but I decided against it as it would have taken 4 inches off the back. The third trim I evened it all out. All one length all the way around when it's loose. I like it better than ever. I've always been a fan of those thick blunt ends.
If YOU want to trim it, then get a trim. Firgure out whats most important in your growth: overall length or neatness and evenness. I suggest going to a salon that has a good reputation with male longhairs.
***If the stylist tries to convince you for even one second to take off more than you want. Stand up and leave. That's a regret you don't want.***
Sorry for the ramble if it doesn't help at all. Its hard to give opinions without a pic.
I guess I should mention that when I comb/brush my hair, I get snags a lot, and within one brushing I get bunches of hair on the floor. Is this a sign I should do something, like use a better product, or get it trimmed? Or is that normal?
Losing hairs is not abnormal at all - we also loose hair every day which is replaced in the life cycle of hiar.
I suspect that you should brush more carefully and use finger combing as well to remove snags - we all get those too from time to time but can minimise them. You don't brush when it is wet do yuo?
Forget cutting that is not a solution.
