First off, I found this site when I was first growing my hair out. I have never posted, but read it often to get ideas. Before I started growing it, I used clippers to shave it to about 2 inches. Now its about to the middle of my back!
Anyways, my question is in regards to how I tie a low ponytail. I can't for the life of me seem to get it to work! When I try it, the hair on the sides never gets pulled tight enough, and its very loose. Ive tried to look for videos, but the helpful ones are all from the perspective of someone doing it to someone else, so I don't know how my hands should be.
Any tips or ideas? I don't know why its hard for me. My hair is naturally straight btw.
I have the exact same problem. I apply the hairband and it feels pretty tight, but then it just slides off. I guess my hair's too awesome to be binded. But it's kind of annoying when I wake up at 5 to shower, dry, brush painfully for 20 minutes, and then go to my first period class which is LPF (total running class).
I used to do that same thing... but then I figured something out! I have been taking showers the night before class, that way I don't have to get up so damn early and I can sleep about 1 hour and half longer! My hair is perfectly fresh and clean when I get up and is through out the day. Maybe try taking a shower the night before your day and see how that works, it does wonders for me.
And about the pony tail issue, you guys, I have the same problems, ha ha! I don't know how the hell to tie a correct pony either.
I always wake up with bed hair, and my hair's so thick that there's no way of combing it unless I shower and get it to a softer state.
All my problems would be solved if I could figure out how to do a braid. My hair wouldn't knot in my sleep or during LPF, and then I could undo it and show off my silky mane.
And waking up at 5 is no problem for me. I usually have homework I forgot to do and I like having time before school.
If you're washing your hair every day, that will make it harder to tie back. You could try tying it into a segmented tail at night. First tip, never use rubber bands. Always use fabric covered ones and if you can find bands without metal clips, even better. Tie the first band as you would normally for a tail. Then, tie another immediately below that and slide it down to your desired length. Then add another and another. That will hopefully help you to avoid bed hair and give you more time to spend in the morning on things that are more pleasant than detangling!
Braiding's not too difficult. All it takes is practice. The hardest part is getting the strands even. Divide your hair into three segments. Cross the one in your right hand over the one in the middle, then the one in the left over that and keep going, right, left until you reach the length you feel is right. It's easier if you start off by practising with a bit of your fringe so you can see what you're doing.
Another option is a herrinbone braid, where you divide your hair into two sections and take a small segment from the right over to the left, then another from the left to the right and carry on until the end. That's easier than a three-strander but takes a long time to do (and undo).
Good luck and happy hair growth.
one thing I found is that I had to try different hair ties. Some were no good at all; others worked a lot better. Avoid the ones with metal in them. Factors such as the size of the hair tie, its thickness and the type of fabric matter. Unfortunately you pretty much just have to buy different ones until you find something that works.
Don't use a rubber band either.
Straight hair shouldn't be a problem if you have a lot of it, or it's thick so you can get a wad of hair together that's as thick or thicker than the base of your pinkie finger. you may have to put your hair through the tie twice, in other words double up the hair tie so it wraps around your hair two times. A conditioner or a leave-in conditioner that adds volume and body can make your hair a bit thicker. But these add buildup that will have to be removed with clarifying shampoo such as Suave Daily Clarifying after a few days.
1. First, insert thumb and 1st three fingers into the loop of the ponyband of your choice with the right hand.
2. With both hands gather the hair somewhat as in the photo above.
3. Right hand expands loop and "wraps it" around hair. (All is now held in this position with the right hand and the left hand is free.)
4. Left hand then pulls hair through loop. (At this point the ponyband may or may not be tight enough.) If not so, hold the tail in place with the left hand while the right (still holding the band) twists it all the way around to make yet another loop. Proceed as before and most likely this time it WILL be tight enough.
Takes a little while to get the hang of at first. After that it can be done without thinking and merely by feel.
Hope this is of help to you.
ps#1.: Robs advice about ponybands to use is right on target.
ps#2.: Photo above is a bit dated by about 3-1/2 years. Was all I had that hints at how to grasp the hair before getting the Ponyband on.
The only trouble with making one I had was not enough hair :p
Just gather all your hair and hold it with one hand.
You put the other hand with the tie around your finger around the tail.
Then grab the tie and twist and repeat previous step.
Hope everything is clear, it hard to explain.
Just pratice in front of the mirror and eventualy you will get it.
Thanks for the tips. I guess Ill just keep practicing. Cant seem to get the bottom to stay in place lol.
