I have been growing my hair from scratch (shaved), and it is currently at 4 months. However, I am confused as to the definition of the 'awkward phase'. Some people tell me I am already in the awkward phase, while others say it starts at about a year. I guess it varies depending on hair growth rate, hair style etc, but at what stage does the awkward part start and what is so awkward about it?

Hi !
Awkward stage is when hair bore you so much that you want it short immediatly :) Akwkard means that you have a puffy head, hair in the eyes, in the ears and you can't tie it, etc, etc. Awkward.
At 4 months, it's not already awkward. Some people don't know this stage, anyway...

I think he means it's when hair annoys you so much that you want to cut it off all the time!!
I don;t think it's in that stage yet; with curly hair I went in that stage at about 8 months of growth; you still have a bit more time appreciating your hair before it starts getting everywhere and looking terrible! Cheers :P
What Vivien said plus some people in the awkward stage find it hard to go out in public or to their job as their hair sticks up or curls funny etc. at 4 months I would say your not far away from awkward but not there yet. It does vary for people. Some even go through the growing process with no issues at all. My worst part was the hair in the eyes and that lasted maybe 3 months.

It all depends on how you feel about your hair. I'm in the thick of the awkward phase now--always getting scratched in the eyes, tickling the ears, on the nose...it really sucks cause there's nothing I can do about it except wait.
But I'll know I'm done as soon as I start to feel a little more comfortable with it. Whenever that will be...
It all depends on your hair type and so without a pic it is hard to tell. I have very curly hair and started from a shaved head about a year and a half ago and my awkward stage started at about 5/6 months and still has not got to a length where it hangs without some care and i expect at least another 4 months until i have a few more options open to me. Hang in there and i am sure that when you pass this dreaded stage you will be glad you stuck with it.
Best of luck
Mat
I think its your perception on what the akward stage is, so if you think its pretty long and looks good thats what it is to you, its different for everyone
The awkward phase is when it's just long enough to start driving you nuts and just short enough to keep you from doing much of anything about it. On average, it lasts just over a year, by which point it's finally long enough to start lying down under its own weight, or be worn in a ponytail, whichever you prefer.
Personally, I think it's called the awkward stage because when your hair gets longer it is unfamiliar with the length, most likely because it's because your hair has never been that long before. Therefore it goes in a hassle, goes in tangles, your hair feels awkward and it drives you insane. I am still in the awkward stage at 10 months, and my hair still drives me crazy. When you are able to put ALL your hair in a real ponytail, you are technically out of the awkward stage, and your hair will grow much more easily and be more stable.

Akward stage is when your hair driving you insane, it gets in your eyes tickles your ears and so on. Also your hair has crazy flips at the end. It think it starts at about 6months and last till 2 years.
But this al depends on your hair and how you expierence it all. Right now I can tuck my hair behind my ears so the worst part is over for me. When I wear it down it looks pretty good only the ponytail is not complete yet.
I can tuck my hair behind my ears too now at 15 months.. But my hair is big and curly so even though the top front part is solved, the back still juts out and makes my head look really weird, so I don't put my hair behind my ears much!... The curls at the back still stick upwards or at a horizontal angle making me look stupid sometimes. Ah well
