Just wondering when you guys wear backpacks how do you wear your hair with them. Do you have your hair underneath of the backpack or do you pull your hair out and wear it over the backpack. I usually wear it out over the backpack, but as it gets longer it's getting harder to move my backpack far enough away from my back to pull out my hair. Does it cause damage to leave your hair under your backpack?
Whenever I go hiking with a backpack, I usually wear my hair out over the pack, either tailed or loose. My pontail's about 22" [at the longest] and don't have any problems pulling it out from under the pack. As far as damaging my hair, I don't have any idea. Hope this helps...

i guess if you put it over the backpack it wouldnt do any damage unless the backpack has alot of velcro on it.
But if its just for school there are alot of other bags you could wear so you dont have to worry about that.
I am a student so I wear a backpack quite often. When ever I am wearing it, I usually pull my hair from the back ends around the the front so no hair is on my back and being damaged under the straps on my shoulder. It kinda makes a V shape on the back of my neck, if you know what I'm trying to explain. Other times I just let it loose over the backpack itself.

I plait my hair and leave it hanging down over one shoulder or the other out of the way of the back. That helps to avoid any snagging issues.
I'm student, so backpack are part of my daily life...
I avoid the problem making a bun generally. A braid is acceptable :)
I didn't wear my hair loose or in ponytail with a backpack since 2 years, because my hair is quite fragile ant tangle easily.

I think wearing it under your backpack damages it so it's best to wear it over your backback or move it to the front while wearing one.
Bun or ponyscrub, depending on what I am doing...if I am just hiking, my hair will stay up in my single stick bun most of the day, if I am doing trailwork, or it is nasty/dusty, I'll wear a ponyscrub.
Hair under the pack is just asking for damage and tangles, dreadlocks, really.
Hair loose? Not when the pack is on.
Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to keep wearing my hair over my backpack, since it seems to cause damage having it underneath it.
Hi Garth, I have the same problem when cycling, so I have opted for a waist pack - I can't get so much stuff in it (which could be seen as a good thing), but until my hair is down to my waist I am good to go!!

I use panniers when on the bike. I always feel a little off-balance if I've got a backpack on while cycling, even just the Camelback.
I definitely couldn't cycle with my hair loose. I did that once a year ago and took over an hour to get the tangles out. Goodness knows what it would be like now with more hair to get knotted up.
Try riding a motorcycle with your hair loose - now thats the definition of knotted hair!!
Here in California, you have to ride with a helmet [the law] so 1 time I tried not tailing my hair... never again! :-) I definitely agree... knotted hair!

I've never been on a motorbike with long hair and I'm not very likely to try it. However, I have been out in a drop-top with the lid down and no baffle between Oxford and Brighton. Now I know why women tend to wear head scarves!
