Dear friends,
I'm new to long hair and growing my hair out for the first time.
So I've stopped going to the barber for a while now.
But something is bothering me: I'm wondering if I still DO need to go to the barber for minor trimming, like to even out ends and trim around the hair on the neck or etc. I'm worried that if I don't go to a barber I'll have long hair, but scraggly-looking hair.
What do women do? They have long hair but still go to stylists for some cutting? What gets cut?
My bottom-line question is: if I have long hair, can a barber do anything valuable for me anymore? Does long hair need minor trimming to look good?
Any advice is appreciated.
It's a matter of preference. Some people prefer the natural look, but if you want to get it cut to a certain shape then by all means do so.
I would advise however that you grow finish growing it to your desired length before getting it cut if you haven't already reached that stage.

There are two options:
Growing it out without a trim, you hair will be out of the akward stage the fastest.
Growing it out with trimmming, your hair will look slightly better but the akward stage will take longer.
It's a matter of personal preference, I've grown my hair out for one year now without a trim.
As Vincent says if you don't trim it grow out quicker...eh trimmers!!!
My advice would be stop visiting the barber and let it grow for at least a couple of years and don't go anywhere near any scissors!
Cheers,

There would be no value in going to a barber, that is unless you want a hair cut. Let the hair grow out for years untouched.
As for the Women, best to ask them.
NO!!!! Stay away from those who cut hair. There is no need for a trim.
I'm going to go with a different side and say you can get trims. Now I don't mean once a month trims, more like once a year. So you stay away from scissors, but getting a trim once a year can make your hair look much nicer because it evens it out and gives you fresh new ends. So trims are good in very small annual doses in my opinion.
I've had three trims since beginning to really grow my hair 10 months ago--in February, May and August.
February was to trim more around the back as my head was getting distressingly mullet-looking. May was more of an all-over trim that looked like a mistake at first but then settled down so that my hair, which had gotten very moppy, at least laid down some more. August was a trim straight across the back near the hairline, that I had thought would be good for evening things out, but instead left my hair looking "bobbed," a feminine sort of look that I really wasn't going for.
*Sigh*
Well, even with two more months of growth since the last trim, it still looks bobbed and I'm figuring that will take at least several more months to soften. I look at my hair, where I am *so* close to being able to tuck my bangs behind my ears, and I wonder what it would look like now if I hadn't done any of these things. I believe it would have been better, and certainly further along toward the exit from awkward.
My advice is don't make the mistakes I've made. On the other hand, I do understand what it's like to feel that you can't stand hair in this condition *one more day*. So a trim isn't the end of the world, but in the longer run you will probably wish that you hadn't.
