Just let the hair grow. Don't be sissors and trim happy. (A few dustings "maybe," but ONLY for split ends "if" causing severe tangles and knots.) It really isn't difficult. That's all I did. Does my hair look as if it needs a trim? Does it need to be evened-up? It has merely been allowed to do its own thing. (Note how it "even-ups" itself naturally.) No Barber Shops or Salons to run to even needed. No "thinning-outs" required. (It will do that on its own.) Layering? (It does that Natures Way on its own as well.)
Growing out your hair to be a longhair can be a really fun experience. Enjoy the fun! :-)

Wow...look at that eh trimmers!
You're absolutely right, Justin. I've followed those exact steps my whole way so far, and I plan on doing the same for many years to come. You're a prime example of success when it comes to growing one's hair long; you've done it without all these extra trims and evening up type fiascos. For that, I salute you!
Cheers!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU JUSTIN!!! I ,too, have never trimmed a hair in 8 years.....if you want it long...you gotta grow it!
Excellent advice, Justin. It really is that simple and all it takes is some patience and common sense :-)
You prove that trimming is not necessairy and encourages me to keep on growing my hair the way I do.
Well said Justin. I have pretty much held this "ethic" all the time I've been growing my hair and I'm quite happy with what I've ended up with. It's a no fuss approach too which is great by me :P

Hi Justin,
Thank you for the wonderful advice, and for the inspirational photo! I am following your advice as well, just letting it grow, and had a small "dusting" trim which Tammy did for me. I hope that it grows a lot longer.
My best, as always,
David
Great head of hair there, Justin. (And you've chosen some great scenerey to capture, too!)
Thanks for the advice.

Hi! Not to be, y'know, contrary or anything... ;-)
I do occasionally get mine trimmed a few times a year (in fact I just got it trimmed and re-shaped this week), but that's mainly because I tend to be going for a '70s-'80s Rawk Star look, which wants bangs and layering. Besides, in its natural state my hair has roughly the consistency of a Brillo pad--terribly difficult to comb through when dry (and sometimes even when wet).
You can see what I'm talking about at the top of this post. A really good "after" photo (taken the night of the day I got my relax job) is at www.MarilynChen.com; I can't link to it because the page coding doesn't seem to allow for it. Click on "People", then advance to "08" by clicking on each photo (or find "01" in gray in the lower left and slide your mouse to the right until "08" appears". Another good "before" photo is on the front of my Myspace page.

People come up to me and admire my hair and ask what they can do to have hair like mine. "Three words: Don't Cut It!"
Pic from yesterday, up at Holcomb Lake above Devil's Postpile (California).
True...there are nuances to hair care, but the bottom line is not cutting.

Hi Robert, the fact is that very few men can grow hair as long and as thick as yours. Yeah, I know, mine is 2 or 3 inches longer, but yours is 2 to 3 times as thick.
Bottom line: It comes down to a roll of the genetic dice. It is truely a gift from your ancestors. Long, thick, natural hair can't be bought at any price. You get it from your folks.

No argument, but when someone is at pixie or bob length, they need to lay off the scissors more than worrying about their genetics.
The answers I give to the much less common commenters with longer hair are quite different. More along the lines of: "You picked the wrong parents, eh? *wink*"
Mind-blowing gorgeous long hair if there ever was! Who could wish for any more magnificent than what you have attained.......and all without trim, trim, trim.
Thanks for posting this photo of the greatest inspiration not only to those desiring to grow out their hair long, but to those that are well on their way.
Justin~
And, in the end, trimming just detracts from your natural end point. Do I wish my terminal length was longer though? I have to admit to that...but you can't argue with genetics.
You're welcome! That deserves another inspirational picture...
WOW.........Don't know if I should faint now or later. That HAS to be one of the greatest long hair photos of all times! Takes alot to make me jealous. LOL :-)
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!
Absolutely amazing and definitely inspiring. I just hope my genetics permit hair as long as yours.
