I know that this is a long-hair board and I know to many of you this is probably a medium length, but I still thought this would be the best place to ask this question.
How long do you think it would take to grow this style (or maybe a tad longer)?
I've tried growing my hair out before, but I lose patience and end up getting it cut. Any tips on waiting and achieving that length?
I reckon this length would take a year to a year and a half to grow. My tips would be to not cut your hair at all until you get to your desired length. Then you can halt it.
I LAST HAD A HAIRCUT IN JANUARY 2008. THE HAIR WAS 1-2 INCHES LONG THEN I HAVE JUST PASSED THE SAME HAIR LENGTH STAGE AS THE GUY IN THE PIC WHICH TOOK ME JUST UNDER 8 MONTHS TO DO. THE HAIR IS NOW 5-6 INCHES LONG. DIFFERENT FOLKS HAIR GROW AT DIFFERENT RATES - SO GIVE IT A YEAR IF YOUR GROWING FROM A BUZZ CUT IS A GOOD GUESS BASED ON THE AVERAGE GROWTH OF 6 INCHES A YEAR.
jUST HANG IN THERE BROTHER - BE PATIENT AND LET YOUR HAIR DO WHAT COMES NATURALLY AND KEEP AWAY FROM THEM SCISSORS!

Hi Jordan,
Hey, I'm all for medium lengths, as I feel they look cool and are "the best of both worlds", --- not so long that they have to be restrained all the time (like I feel I have to do with my own belt-length hair); but, definitely not your "typical", society-approving, average-looking boring short male haircut, either!
Oh, I'd say about a year, give or take a few months in either direction (depending on how short your hair is right now).
The secrets to finding (and keeping) a good medium-length hairstyle are these:
1) The next time you feel like you want a trim, go to a very reputable salon, one that specializes in long hair is even better (do NOT go to any of the cheap chain haircutter places). As the saying goes, "you get what you pay for!" And if you don't like the first stylist you go to, then DON'T go back to that person, --- go to another one.... Ask any longhaired friends (including longhaired women) if they have any recommendations of stylists they trust, --- and then tip that stylist well, if they're good! A good stylist will lork WITH you, --- even taking the time to discuss your goals before they even pick up a pair of scissors (you can even bring in that photo to show him/her what your ultimate goal is).
2) The longer you postpone your next trim, the better, --- because your hair will get longer on its own that way, the more you just leave it alone! I realize that sometimes it's, "easier said than done!"; but, if you can wait one week, why not try waiting 2?? (LOL)
3) The next time you feel frustrated and are starting to lose patience, instead of cutting it *all* off, just go in for a light trim and/or slight re-styling... You'll be pleasantly surprised at how this appraoach and tactic can make a HUGE difference in your eventual success (I used this method myself, when I grew my hair out the first time, during the early '90s).
4) As Bill C. has said in one of his many well-written posts (or maybe it's in his writings that are in the Links section, "On Being A Longhair"): long hair is a living, moving thing (or something similar to that wording), --- it is not static and stiff and well-behaved like short hair. Please realize that the longer your hair gets, the more it will move in the breeze, etc. on its own. Rather than always trying to fight it or "control" it (as short-haired people are successfully able to do), it will help you tremendously to let go of some of that urge to always worry about how your ever-increasing lengthening locks look every moment of the day, --- and instead of always trying to control it, ALLOW it to be itself (and have any trims you wish to have done styled accordingly)! There is beauty, freedom, and great joy in getting used to having a bit of the "wild and care-free" look, --- and there are plenty of different medium lengths and styles that accomplish exactly that, and look hands-down AWESOME!
5) Never, EVER "toss in the towel": if you lose your patience and feel that you can't stand it anymore, and are tempted to cut, rather than remove it ALL, just cut off only a little bit instead. In other words, if you feel you "must" cut, it is better to just cut off only a little amount, than to keep pushing yourself towards the edge of total frustration and insanity (lol). Keep using this compromise-type approach (or should I use the word, "temperance?"), and eventually you'll find just the right length and style that best suits YOU!!

Actually, I myself would consider this style as long hair. It surely is a far far cry from a shaved head or Buzz Cut and it looks really neat!
For yourself, growing your hair out to achieve this length should only take about a year which isn't that bad at all. Being the length it is, it is really the Awkward Stage in suspension. And contrary to alot of guys, I found the Awkward Stage a very fun period with a different look every day.
Best of luck to you in growing out your hair and reaping the rewards of the goal that you WILL achieve.
That lenght will only take about a year to archieve.
Thanks everyone for all the great responses.
Hopefully I can fight my way through and eventually obtain this style.
Jordan,
It depends on where your current length is at the time...but I'd say just shy of a year if it's not from a buzz cut.
Take care, good luck, and keep it growin'!

I'm definitely not coming from a buzzcut.
I recently got a cut near the end of August, but it wasn't anywhere near a buzz. I'll try to get a picture up.
