would it hurt to do it once in a while just wondering?
Yes it would. Some people will say they have had no problems whilst there are many posts from those that bitterly regret their actions.
Enjoy your hair but don't risk damage.
My honest opinion is that, no, if you take care of your hair, brush it, oil it, do everything else you can to take care of your hair, straightening it once in a while, once or twice a year, no shouldn't damage your hair.

This is just my opinion but since we're men, most of us dont know how to straighten our hair for shit and thats how some mens' manes get ruined. But if you know how to take of your hair and learn how to properly straighten your hair then do it! (and post pics while you're at that lol)
Yes and No
I don't know that much about straightening, since my hair is already straight, but my mom has wavy-ish hair and once in a while she blow dries it out straight, and looks pretty nice
In my opinion if you're wanting to straighten your hair just for the occasion, I would use a blow dryer (with a brush). From what Ive heard, its much less damaging than the metal from a straightener
Remember to use a leave in conditioner or something of the sort before doing it too, to keep the moisture in your hair
oh, and don't get caught in the bubble of "straightening". I have seen a lot of people who end up getting caught with the "I have to straighten or curl my hair every day", excessive styling, and ending up with healthy hair that ends up like straw, later having to cut years of hair off
Good Luck Dude,
Peace

Hi Mark. I suggest you keep your hair the way it is. My hair, though a bit wavy, is fine the way it is.
Regardless
Hey Mark,
As someone who uses a flat-iron for straightening I have to say that it works for me. I don't use it every day and I've found that using a natural bristle brush works well to keep it that way for a few days. Some will tell you it will damage your hair and they may be right on some occasions. But if you're hair's like mine where you can't run your fingers through it without hitting major snags then I say do it. I doesn't matter if I soak my hair in oil for 3 months, my hair is not going to stop tangling or become silky and manageable. Straightening using a flat-iron works for me. I tell people that my hair is pretty much damaged as soon as it comes out of my head. It's always been dry and hard to manage. Sometime last year I began using one...mainly out of frustration but also, I wanted to see how it looked and felt. I was not disappointed. But use caution. Your hair may be much different than mine. Do it once and see if it works for you. Personally, I have enjoyed my hair much more because of it.
Hope that helps!
Take care and keep it growin'!
Brett
Growing My Hair Out...Again! Progress Pics
Hi Mark
It can't hurt everynow and then. Just make sure the straightners are not too hot because that can badly damage your hair. You need just enough heat to straighten you hair - not to fry it! You can also get some straightner protection spray to keep your hair protected.
Take care,
Neil
G'day Mark.
I recently got my hair straightened with the Japanese Permanent Hair straightening method - using one of the better processes less harmful to the hair then others.
I made that decision after 2 weeks of using ceramic hair straightener irons and every time I used them I could feel some hair strands breaking from the applied heat! So after a half dozen times using - I made the decision to get the hair permanently straightened as in the long term I wanted healthy hair and realised for me that regular use of hair irons if your goal is for long hair wasn't a very good idea!
My natural hair texture is like Jorge Garcia's (Hurley from LOST TV series) and when the hair is long enough to tie back in a pony tail I will probably let it go back to it's natural state. It's just getting through the awkward stage without the hair looking poofed up, frizzy and messy.
Mark -if your going to get your hair straightened with hair irons you must use some moisturizing spray that will protect your hair better. Also get someone to regularly check your hair for split ends - some hair is more prone to splitting then others so hair irons may be OK on regular basis for some people but not for others. Personally if your goal is for long hair hair irons in my opinion isn't a good idea.
PS I think your hair looks nice and healthy and you appear to be almost out of the awkward stage now.
Kind Regards,
Duncan Roy from OZ

I just want to second this. It's MASSIVELY EXPENSIVE, but in my case it worked, and as I've mentioned elsewhere my hair's naturally got the silky softness of a Brillo pad. It didn't stay completely straight, but it is a good deal straighter than before, and easier to brush through. (Though for all that, now that I'm FINALLY straight [heh!] on jojoba oil and bristle brushes, I might just to that route in the future.)
My Myspace page
YES I AGREE THAT IT IS EXPENSIVE - I DID IT 2 MONTHS AGO AND IT WAS MONEY WELL SPENT (worth every cent) - IT VIRTUALLY CHANGED MY LIFE - LESS HASSLE WITH THICK FRIZZY HAIR - HENCE LESS TIME CONSUMING STRESS KEEPING THE HAIR REASONABLY "TAME" - YOU COULD SAY THAT THE HAIR IS NOW A "REFORMED CHARACTER GONE STRAIGHT"
Cheers,

No need to shout!
I don't think straightening it once in a while does much damage but I wouldn't take the risk myself.
