Hey guys,
I wanted to try out a new shampoo yesterday so I bought a bottle of Aussie Awesome Volume shampoo which contains sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. Are either of these going to end up being harmful to my hair? I have straight and fine hair which gets very oily overnight so by the time I shower in the morning its a greasy mess therefore I have to wash it every day. I only wash my scalp and part line and condition only my ends and partial mid-length of my mane (My hair is about 14 inches long).
Up until today I've been using a sulfate free shampoo but I quite like these Aussie products and I remember reading that a handful of you all use them as well. Hopefully one of you can shed some light on this for me, I don't want to be damaging my hair with sulfate cleansers if I don't have to.
I usually avoid sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate, personally. However, that said, my scalp has a tendency to flake if I don't wash once per week (or so) with a medicated, anti-dandruff shampoo...
The main thing to consider is the fact that the "SLS" tends to build up on the scalp if it's not rinsed off thoroughly. Nasty, waxy buildup of SLS on the scalp can lead to clogged pores, etc - so it's not terribly healthy for the hair. So rinse for a good, long time after using products that contain SLS.
Perhaps you may consider a combination approach... a few days per week, use the Aussie... a few days per week, use a more natural alternative?
That's all I've got.
Hi,
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is bad. Really harsh. And I believe it's less and less used. Sodium Laureth sulfate is way less harsh. Ammonium Lauryl(reth ?) Sulfate is good too. Anyway the main component in a shampoo is the detergent, and these sulfates are the most common detergents (the only ?)
Try to not wash your everyday (every two days, then every three days. I could be better; the only way to know is to try.
Bye
Vivien
I have really learned it doesn't matter what shampoo you use, if you use a good conditioner.
Is that what the Smurfs wash their hair with, smulfates? I think they had long hair up under their hats. Plus Papa Smurf would have to wash his beard with something. And Smurfette. One female for all those Smurfs!!! Aye ya ya! But her hair always was very nice. She probably used something without smulfates in it so as to keep her hair from having split ends. Even if she did get split ends, I imagine they could have concocted some majical potion to fix it, "Wing of bat and eye of axolotl, a leaf of Swiss edelweiss." Poof! Capelli lunghi senza spaccati! I never saw any bathrooms in their houses though. Maybe they went down to the river to wash themselves. I always thought the Smurf village must be somewhere in the north of France, maybe near Rouens back when all that was forested. Don't know why though. They spoke good English. The whole show seemed to be set in a generic, pre-Renaissance Europe without political implications. Though, many said that Papa Smurf with his red hat represented Karl Marx. Maybe he was a little wizard. Wizardry--was that ever really a profession? I can't imagine it paid very well. Alchemy just doesn't work. Lord knows I've tried it. But yeah, did the Smurfs have long hair? Under their hats, of course?
Hey Matt... something I've been wondering about... What color does a Smurf turn when he holds his breath??

I recommend baby shampoo or the all-natural chemical free homemeade stuff you can get on eBay or natural stores.
