Hello. I've been following the threads of the MLHB with interest since July this year mostly as a lurker. Your a great group of people here, and it's been inspiring.
I have been an "inner-long hair" since childhood in spirit, and have always yearned to grow out my hair and thought that now would be a good a time as any. Social pressure and other people stiffled this urge for many years.
Here's a picture of my hair growth at 9 months. Last haircut was in January 2008 when it was cut to around 1-2 inches.(2-5cm)
The hair is naturally wavy/curly and is something similar to that of shypii90, nate, and neil's.
I got it permanently straightened using the Japanese process 8 weeks ago - to cope better with the "awkward phrase".
Hair length 8 weeks ago was an average 8cm (or just over 3 inches) then started on Hair Food biotin tablets, along with regular doses (one large spoonful mixed in water) of dried powdered kelp every 3 days, and and every other 2 days, brewers yeast. Hair growth was 4 cm or (just under 2 inches) in this last 8 week period.
This is the second serious attempt to grow long hair in 20 years.
Hair looks great - as does the beard.
Let it grow
Let it grow
Let it grow
You'll look great no matter what your length goal!
Karsten
Hey Karsten,
Thanks for the kind comments! I aspire to have hair as beautiful and as long as yours in time?
Best,
Duncan
Duncan,
Your hair looks great. I am intrigued by both the hair food tablets and the kelp. Also, I'm wondering if the Japanese straightening process did any noticeable damage to your hair?
Keep growing and let your inner longhair run free.
Cheers
Don
Hi Don,
Thanks for kind comments on the hair. The tablets I use are Figaro Hair Food (available in Australia) however recently I started on 300mg of Biotin as well. I heard in the USA that Hair Formula 37 is good for faster hair growth (not available in my country) They have a website with heaps of testimonials.
I found a youtube video where the girl in it talks about how to grow faster hair naturally (I'll post the link on a thread for you) and she mentioned that if you use a spoonful of Brewers Yeast regularly and Kelp as well it boosts growth along with a healthy diet of fresh fruit and veggies. I mix a large spoonful in with half a schooner glass filled with water in the mornings and swig it down. 2 days i just use Brewers Yeast and every 3rd day I use Powdered Kelp (Yuck!) Only been using for nearly 2 months and the hair does seem to have grown well in that period.
Also I heard cigarettes, alcohol and caffeine can slow hair growth down too as it robs the nutrients that would go to the scalp.
About the Hair Straightening: I got my hair done 2 months ago and it has worked out really well - I think it actually improved the quality of my hair for the better, it's a lot shinier, no more friz, less split ends now, dandruff and itchy scalp is no longer a problem. And the hair is now like a good kid to it's parent - well behaved, calmed right down, a lot less rowdy! The only side effect is that on the ends of the hair it's a bit drier then before and a little wee bit of Jojoba oil on the tips works just fine with my hair.
Getting my hair straightened changed my life and boosted my esteem as I always hated having thick curly hair. Now there's heaps less time spent on maintenence and hassles with it.
I'd probably get it done again in 6 months time of which the hair would be close enough to put in a ponytail and then maybe let the natural hair grow back out in it's wavy curly pattern.
Don I understand what it is like to have wild hair and the difficulty in growing it out. Many times I too grew hair then cut it off because it just got too much to handle! Heat and Humidity in Summertime and very thick poofy hair can drive you nuts! This time though I'm going to go the whole mile and not give up!
However I did a great deal of research before taking the plunge! Seems to work best on "unprocessed" or "virgin" hair - ie hair that has never been bleached or had any chemicals on it before, and works best on strong, thick hair which has a good porosity. If your hair is very dry or brittle, and strands break easily it probably isn't going to work as well. Also good to have at least 3-4 inches of hair growth on your head as there's sufficient weight to help with the gravity of the hair.
Wish you all the best on your hair journey
Cheers,
Duncan
Hi Duncan Roy,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and I am very pleased that you have decided to "de-lurk" and share with us your progress. You are blessed with thick and healthy hair, and are off to a great start in your hair growing journey. I wish you the very best of success as you grow your hair longer.
Take care, and keep it growing!
David
Thanks for the comments David.

Duncan
Ah! your hair is naturally like mine!
i would have straightened mine but last time i did so i had to chop half of my hair off after 4 months because the amount of damage caused was INCREDIbLE!
so super good luck with that!
Shawn
Hello Shawn,
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences with hair straightening. If you mind me asking - what sort of process did you use on your hair and what caused the damage?
Best,
Duncan
