Since I know there's alot of metalheads on here, I figured I'd pose this question. What's your favorite kind of metal? I love all metal but melodic and folk metal is my fav. Bands like Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Norther, etc...
My favorite metal is the metal inside my head. :-) Kinda like an extrapolation of '80s glam-metal, but with heavy influences from avant-garde music of all sorts; I'm a fan of both King Crimson and Arnold Schoenberg, with Bela Bartok coming up strong. (Bartok would really seem the most obvious influence, I guess; there's a sort of rhythmic drive in his music that you don't necessarily get with Schoenberg's.) I also like early synth music (Tangerine Dream, for example), and I'm interested in "industrial" textures too. Put it all together and see what happens... If could pick any backing musicians I wanted and I wasn't thinking about the look (which, being me, I am), I'd probably want Morgan Ågren on drums and Steve Vai on guitar--both connoisseurs of Frank Zappa, notably enough. OK, throw in John Petrucci on guitar, too, and maybe even old Uncle Robert Fripp.
BTW, the "look" I dreamed up that you see on my Myspace page is essentially the look I'd adopt to perform this music in public--at least the "Gothicized" inflection of it. (Actually, I've gotten to do this exactly twice already, with a cover band doing "Goth" versions of old prog-rock tunes.) I'm always looking for fellow conspirators, of course! ;-)

I'm a power/symphonic junkie, but I listen to some death metal, but not much. My favorite bands are Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Within temptation (now demoted to roc, I guess D:), In flames, Sonata arctica (though I listen to them less nowadays), etc. etc.
Death metal is probably my favorite followed very closely by epic heavy metal like Manilla Road and Doomsword. I like it all, although I'm not a very big fan of power metal and symphonic metal.
Doom metal and Prog metal. My favorite bands are Opeth, Katatonia, Isis, Swallow the Sun, My Dying Bride, stuff like that.
I grew up on the first wave of black metal(back in 1995,I was about 11 years old)(Bathory,King Diamond/mercyful fate/venom,Hellhammer,celtic frost)
then in the late 90's it progressed into the Obscure slavic/scandanavian black metal.
and I discovered Viking metal about 5-6 years ago...
and I have been listening to folk metal for a few years as well.
one of the earlier folk metal bands I can remember is skyclad.
Doom Metal. There's so much awesome music that fits under the banner, that it's definately my favorite metal genre. Doom Over The World!
(Honorable mentions are Death Metal and Avant-garde Metal)
I listen to a lot of metal styles, but my most favorite are female fronted, like Epica, Sirenia, After Forever, Orphanage. The other style is Folk metal like Fintroll, Ensiferum.

YAAAY, someone like me.xD I tend to stray towards female fronted bands, though I like a lot of male-frontedbands too.
I like female fronted and male fronted both, but I like the combination of female voices with male growled vocals the best. It's awesome the hear the contrast between them.
Try the Russian Folk/Viking band "Arkona" fronted by Masha scream.
I discovered them a few years ago.
Thanks for the tip, I really like them!
BLACK, DEATH, AND THRASH!
Those are great bands Mike...Paganfest was killer back in May.
I'm mostly into power and black metal. I love pretty much all metal aside from thrash which I've never been able to get into.

Damascus steel.... oh wait, you're talking about bands... oops [grin]
I like pretty much all kinds of metal, like thrash, melodic, death, black, new, alternative and gothic. Now I'm listening more to gothic and black metal bands, like Cradle of Filth,Dimmu Borgir,Arch Enemy,Anathema,Lacuna Coil and many, many more.Guess the reason for my gothic transformation is ''girls'',basically XD.Stay Heavy!
I like tend to like the more harder type of metal, like powermetal and such, Nightwish is one of my biggest fans in the metal genre.
I'm also into 80's hair metal, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, dunno if the last one counts as hair metal but anyway:)
In fact i listen to many kinds music but that was just the metal part:D
Lets see, Mostly Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Folk/Viking Metal.
I'd have to agree with you on Eluveitie their new album is amazing, I just saw Ensiferum and Amon Amarth live last week both amazing bands.
I'm also into some Slayer, old Metallica, All of Arch Enemy since Angela, Children of Bodom, In Flames, Dimension Zero, and of course, Wintersun. Of course theres more but I don't feel like listing all.
I have always been a fan of the stripped down sound of old thrash metal - and the new stuff as well - because it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. I also listen to power metal bands like Iced Earth and progressive metal bands like Opeth. I've never been a massive fan of death and black metal, it's a little bit OTT for me, especially the "symphonic black metal" stuff. Infact, I find it a little bit funny. : )

I listen to power, prog, some black, thrash, a little folk etc. I generally like death metal, but i usually listen to the scandinavian death metal bands (Amon Amarth, Behemoth, Vader, The Crown, etc.) rather than, say, Cannibal Corpse or Deicide.
