Hey all,
It's been a while since i've posted but i've been reading alot of the posts on the site still.
Anyway, Just to bring everyone up to date, i currently work in a job where they will not allow men to have long hair. I could make a career at this company (I'd make more in the latter tho) but I've also been thinking about going back to school and going to work in a hospital as a Respiratory therapist.
From the sites i've seen online from different hospital's, it seems they don't disallow it, but i was wondering if anyone on here works in a hospital or knows someone that works in a hospital that could find out for me? While some hospital's might be different then others, i'm just nosy what the norm is.
Thanks!!
Shane
Shane,
I have worked in many different hospitals over the last 15 years and I have gone between having short, medium, and long hair during this time period. Not one person has ever said anything negative about my long hair. So I say go for it!
Hi Shane,
I have to second that and go back school and go for the job you really want to do and I'm sure a very rewarding job. I've not heard about dress code issues in hospitals in the USA or over here in Europe.
Good luck on what you decide.
Cheers,

Last year I took my other half to the Marshfield clinic in Wisconsin for some tests. Marshfield is known regionally as among the best although not as famous as the Mayo clinic. Anyway one of the techs had long hair so I would say your chances are better in the medical field although you may still find some have issues.
I also remember 10 years ago when my sister had her baby at Elkhart General in Indiana I noticed one of their staff had very longhair, not sure what his specialty was though.
Good luck
Kevin
I don't see hair length being an issue, or a barrier to a job in the medical field. You may be requested to restrain it in some form, so as to not have it hanging freely. This may for safety reasons, as long hair + equipment = hazard. I was in a hospital around 10 years ago, and a lab tech was sent to do blood draws. The tech turned out to be an attractive young man with an incredibly nice long blonde ponytail hanging down the back of his labcoat. My doctor has had students shadowed her, a few have been young men with long hair. These are medical school students considering a career in Osteopathy. I say, "Go for it!"
Just follow what you really want to do, if you want to do that job go for it. It's a shame when your old and you're not satisfied with the path you took in life.
Don't know about the hair policy in hospitals, but try to ask other people who work there.
Hey Shane,
My girlfriend is an RN and says qutie a few of the doctors, nurses and staff at her hospital have long hair. She said one of the emergency room doctors that she sees often has a waiste-length tail!! Good luck with everything.

Hi Shane
Anytime I've had to be at a hospital it never has taken me long to spot a longhaired male employee somewhere during my visit.I tend to agree that longhair is generally accepted om men who work in hospitals. Can't say that's a fact but it has been my observation.
