I started to grow my hair out in the summer. I have extremely thick dry hair. I am starting to think ill never be able to grow it out. It is currently pretty short. It only touches my eyebrows in the front and flips up over my ears on the sides. It is also extremely wavy. If I dont wash it for a week, it barely becomes oily at all. I have to use hot oil before washing to keep from it feeling crispy. What should I do? Should I just cut it and accept i will never have long hair or grow it anyway?
I have the worst of both worlds! I have a really oily scalp and really dry hair.
Here's my 2 cents...
Use a good hydrating shampoo and conditioner--lots of conditioner. I like the Suave Professionals Humectant products.
Try using Murphy's super light pomade from the ethnic hair care section. It's super cheap and it works.
Greetings, Mike.
If your hair has too little oil, you may benefit from washing with warm water only. I know of one guy here with really long hair who uses just water and no shampoo at all. I use this routine on my beard and it works. (The hair in my beard has low oil content, and it is very curly.)

How does water washing work? I just wash with water everyday?
Try it maybe every 3 days. If your hair has very little oil, warm water rinsing will help distribute the oil along the hair shaft. This method is best for wavy and curly hair. If it gets too oily over time, you can always a tiny bit of shampoo it.
For me, this method works well on my beard which is oil starved and curly. My scalp has too much oil, so this method does not work there for me.
If your scalp hair is dry and crispy, you don't produce enough natural oil. Detergents in shampoo remove what precious little natural oil you have.

Thanks. Ill try that.
Hi Mike,
I also believe that you should try water only washing. I have wavy hair a few inches past my shoulders and this method works well for me. I do use a very small amount of shampoo on my scalp once a week to prevent it from getting too oily, but other than that, I use only water.
Another trick: You can take a small amount of olive oil and distribute that through your hair. Just put a drop or two on your hands, rub them together, then run your hands down the hair strands. Personally I keep the oiling to the length and the ends, but since you have a dry scalp you may wish to oil that too.
Let us know how your hair is doing in a few weeks. You can definitely grow long hair, you will just need to take a different path than most do.
Cheers,
Peter
