I have been lurking on this site for quite some time, picking up advise on growing long hair. But I have noticed most people don't have hair like mine, and it is quite difficult for me to maintain a long hair style and make it look good. The reason being, my hair is EXTREMELY thick, quite coarse, and somewhat wavy. It is kind of like a lion's mane. And while I really like having it long, A. I live in Florida and it's reallt hot having all that hair, and B. because it's so thick and unruly, I have a hard time keeping it loooking neat. So I was just wondering if anybody else has a similar hair type, and if they could give me some tips. I included a picture so you can see my mane.
Looks like you have a layered cut. Maybe it just grew that way though. Just don't trim or cut it. Use a shampoo and conditioner that is made for your hair type. It will get better.
Welcome ! and I am glad that you "unlurked" to share that beautiful head of hair of yours.....Lion's Mane indeed !
I think with a little more length, gravity will help it look a little less bulky, although I think I look fantastic now....as others have said, avoid any trims or cuts.
I also live in a very hot area and relate with the additional heat with having long hair. Keeping it in a tail and using bandannas really help.
Hope you post your progress.
Thanks for Sharing

Hey there Huntarian,
Your hair looks just fine, --- in fact, I'd say it's a GREAT head of hair to grow out loooooooong!!!
Until it gets long enough to tie all back into a ponytail, though, your mane is gonna look a bit wild & crazy, doing flips and wings and blowing poofy in the wind, etc., etc., etc... It will get worse before it gets better, in other words! If you can, DON'T try too hard to "control" it (other than using bandanas, half-tails, mousse or whatever you prefer when absolutely necessary). Instead, just try to hang back and ENJOY the wacko-ness, because once you can tail it, the testing-time ordeal is finally over...
My best to you!!

Hey man, your hair looks just fine, and don't worry, you're not the only one with lion hair over here XD.I been growing my hair for over a year, and included a pic of what I do when my hair is wild and frizzy, just so you have an idea of how you can manage yours when it is longer.Peace out and stay away from scissors!;)
Hi Huntarian,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and I am glad that you came out of "lurkdom", and decided to share this photo of your mane. You are blessed with a great head of hair, and it is very thick, which is always a blessing. The best advice I can give you right now, is to keep it growing. Eventually, you will be able to achieve a ponytail, but until that time, you can use things like a cap, or a head band to restrain your hair during the "awkward phase"
Welcome aboard,
David
Wow, I also live in Florida and have similar (but shorter) hair. I think the lions mane looks really cool on you, and just try to push it back behind your ears or tail it (that should help solve the heat problem in this perpetually burning climate). I guess the only real cure is for it to get longer. I hope my hair looks as thick as yours when it grows more (this is my 3rd month of growing lol)!
Welcome to the board, you've got a great head of hair.
You're now in the akward stage so your hair will be wild for a while until it's heavy enough.
Until then use bandana's or a cap, and a ponytail for the back.
I started wearing a ponytail very soon because my hair was so wild.
I included a picture of my hair about 5months ago, look at the difference!
Your hair looks cool, I'd be happy if my hair was thicker like yours, most people have times when they wish they could have the opposite hair to what they have, it's a "grass is greener on the other side" type thing, I think really straight hair like mine is hard to make look good :)
I know what you mean about it being insanely thick and annoying... but wow, do I love that look!!
I have really really thick hair, and unlike you, mine's really curly, so it takes FOREVER to grow just a bit of length physically. you have it good! lol
+ my climate's really hot and humid nearly all year (just winter's a bit colder, but nowhere near my ideal climate). Just to let u know. so I'm dealing through difficult hair growing indeed. and yes it IS hot with all that hair, lol, my neck is always sweaty when I'm not with a (tight) ponytail!
As Vincent said, in about 6 months or a bit more it should be easier to manage. Try using headbands or ponytails or something to keep the hair off your neck if it bugs you that much in the heat. Also, if you keep your hair in the front restricted and don't have constant view of your bangs, then it will help you not focus your mind on your hair growth too much! :)
