now, that the losing party used Joe the Plumber in their campaign.
I definitely hope that the "Joe the Plumber" look dies out.
Long hair rocks and yes, I voted for the President elect! ;-D
Who's Joe?
How does a change personality govern attitudes to longhair I wonder!
Cheers,
John.B
As an unlicsneced San Francisco Palm Reader and Fortune Teller, with a proven track record of 100% accuracy in my faux predictions of the future, I can say with total confidence that long hair for men will become mainstream again, --- along with the following other "facts" to look forward to:
1) Just like in Hollywood movies, good always wins over evil...
2) The handsome nice gay guy always marries the pretty lesbian girl in the end....
3) Always on-time and perfectly on-cue, you will have a snowy white Christmas again this year (even if you're in Australia)...
4) The Tooth Faerie has finally increased the amount of money you'll find under your pillow nowadays, --- and it is now big enough to pay off a house mortgage, thanks to all the years of inflation!
5) Other fantasies will be fulfilled upon request with a simple "yes" answer, --- just ask, and I will say the word!

It would be cool, but I don't think politics has much if any effect on hair styles. Where I live, longish hair for guys is pretty mainstream. Lots of guys have kind of an awkward phase look with hair over their forehead and ears, and sort of long in the back. It's kind of the regular guy's version of the more extreme style the emo guys have.
Agreed.
I was in college in the Midwest during the Reagan years and in graduate school during the Clinton years. Judging from my college yearbooks, if anything, guys had LONGER hair during the REAGAN years.
Sadly it will never been mainstream - too many crotchety old men revile it.
Not with rising unemployment. I don't have data to back that up. It's just a hunch. When it's a choice between hair and work, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
wouldn't that be considered discriminatory?
In most states it's legal to discriminate based on hair length.
Except for the District of Columbia
Thats just stupid though, I mean, if there is a guy with more than enough qualifications or is a hard enough worker and has long hair, what difference will that do? He would have to take care of how it looks but thats the point of having long hair as well. I had to cut my hair in Secondary school and it really pissed me off.
I hope it doesnt become mainstream. Who would want to look like everyone else ?
That's a good point. It actually doesn't matter whether long hair would in reality keep someone for a job. Absent other evidence, I could see how someone would cut his hair "just in case."

While I don't know it it will become "mainstream" any time soon, I can say from what I see around me (granted I live on a college campus so my view of 'reality' is a bit screwed) it does seem to be becoming ever more common among the early 20's set. Whether or not that makes it mainstream I don't know, but it does seem to be the current trend, at least as I see it. A few years ago the trend seemed to be toward the "shaggy" look and now that seems to have morphed into even longer styles becoming ever more popular, at least from what I see around me.

If Global Warming continues to heat up - probably not. Where I live more haircuts happen when hot weather & humidity comes around again.
The only plummer in my area is a longhair. And, his name is Joseph.
Shhhhhhh..........a secret. (That's short for Joe.)
I don't think that the failure of the McSame campaign will have much effect.
Long hair on guys became a majority look in the early '70s, but not any longer than shoulder length, so arguably I should have said mid length hair was in the majority in the early '70s. It hasn't happened again since, but it did also happen in previous centuries (I mean previous to the previous one, LOL!), so it can happen again, and evidently will sooner or later. The question is, will it happen more than once per lifetime?
I doubt if waist length hair will ever be in the majority, though, so my 'freak' status is safe enough!
What does the President have to do with long hair?
Sorry, the President elect is choosing all the old, estiblished short-haired men to join the administration. His chief-of-staff is the most partisan person currently in D.C.
The only person with a track record of being able to bring all sides together and get things done is McCain. (Yes, I voted for the only person that was running who could actually make compromises and bring people together to get things going in Washington.) You will see McCain continue to get things done in the Senate.
Nothing will change, including the mainstream hair for men.
You can call me Nostradamus =:^)
Full disclosure: I don't usually vote republican. I consider myself somewhere between a liberal and a libertarian. Thus, if you ask Rush Limbaugh, I am a "pinko", "communist", "rat-bastard" who kills babies and hates America and hates our troops.*
*(This was an attempt at humor, kids, don't try this at home.)
But, the main reason I didn't consider John McCain is that he is not the John McCain I knew a couple of years back. Many of the things he said during this campaign, and said he supported, were not things he said he supported a couple of years before.
He sold his soul and said anything that would get him elected.
I would have considered voting for John, if it was the same John from 2 years ago, but I can't vote for todays John.
Maybe if he grew some long hair I might reconsider...
That's how I feel about him too. Mind you, I'm glad he wasn't elected because he supports Bush on too many things and because he's too pro-war.
This is just highly anecdotal evidence, but here in Hawaii the trend seems to be towards shorter hair. Hair length seemed to reach a maximum around 2005/2006. I'm especially seeing a lot more young guys with buzz cuts this year. Then again, that's just reverting to the norm; except for the late 1970s and the mid 2000s, men in Hawaii have always had short hair.
I think that long hair will never be a mainstream thing. At most it has only ever been common among rock stars! It seems America may have a bigger chance though. : )
