just wondering if it damages hair to leave it in a pony tail while sleeping i found that it keeps my hair alot more manageable and less of a mess in the morning, but then again i dont know if its good or bad to do that
I was wondering the same thing.
I have heard it's damaging for the hair if you wear it in a tie all the time. Because I wear it in a tail a lot during the day, I sleep with it untied. Having a mess in the morning :(
I would say only when you can make a complete ponytail. If your front hair dangles after you put up a ponytail, it is not complete. I would also say it only work if you sleep on your side or stomach.
Regardless
I was wondering this also (for when I am finally able to pull my hair up properly!). I think when the hair's relatively short then the ends will still rub against the hair tie a lot, and they could get damaged regardless of the tie's material!
But I know of a lot of people who sleep with their hair up (with longer hair) and it doesn't seem to be a problem!
Hope that helped.
I think tying it up to sleep helps straighen it a bit. I wouldnt know though. As for damage, I know a lot off people with great hair who sleep with it tied up (most of them girls).
Wear a ponytail (use a very soft "scrunchy" or tie; no rubberbands) but tie it up at the TOP of your head. That way you won't have the problem of mashing a ponytail that is at the back of your head. Good luck! johnnie
It's never done me no harm and I've kept it loose for many years. But perhaps on express bus trips it might worth it!

Hey Mark,
I think it's better to tie it in a ponytail when you go to sleep. It keeps it from getting all tangled up. I usually tie mine back.
Hope that helps.
Brett
I keep multiple ties on my hair, even during sleep. It prevents tangling and damage.

I don't think tying it up is going to cause much more damage than leaving it loose would, but be careful what you tie it with. Avoid anything with a metal clasp or bare rubber.
I'm quite a restless sleeper, so if I didn't tie my hair back, I'd suffocate during the night! I used to wake up frequently during the night because it tickled my face and I often ended up with mouthfuls of hair. When my hair was much shorter, I used to tie it at the top of my head (think pineapple), but these days, now that it's longer, I do the old-fashioned thing of plaiting it for the night. It makes life easier in the morning too as it keeps it from tangling so it's just a case of brushing it quickly rather than working out knots and snarls.
Iam given to understand that the best way to go to sleep with a long hair is to have it in braids. My wife and myself together usually sport loose braids for sleep.
I usually leave it in a ponytail...no apparent damage. When I have it loose, there seems to be more de-tangling to do in the morn.

Mark,
I keep mine in a multi-segmented ponytail most of the time, and always when I go to bed.
No problems ever!

From my own experience I'd say it was ok to do so. I am a very light sleeper and tend to toss and turn over night, so if I leave my hair down I end up with it in my mouth all knotted up and in a right mess by the morning. It's up to you though mate. If it works for you, keep it tied back.
Take care.
