Hi everyone,
I'm getting kind of tired of having mostly straight hair. My hair, especially when clean, has a fair amount of body and a slight wave to it, which is nice, but I'm anxious to do something fun like get a permanent so it's kinky, maybe something à la Kenny G. I want to bring a picture of a guy with long, kinky hair to the stylist to give him/her an idea of what I'm looking for, but I don't want to take one of Kenny G.
Any ideas where I can find some pictures like this? Even ones of yourselves, perhaps (but only if I have your permission, of course). I figure I could surf the 'net for pictures, but probably some of you have a better idea of where to start. I'd just like to see a bunch of examples and find something that is along the lines of what I'm looking for. I saw a guy with really cool hair in Santa Cruz the other day, and thought to myself I'd like to have hair like that, but I didn't think to get a picture of him.
My hair is about mid-back length, and dark blond/light brown. I'm not planning on changing the color.
Thanks!
Hi there,
Tired of straight hair! That's a good one!
If you do a permanent to get kinky hair (not curly.. kinky) then your length will shrink so much you may scream :-P. Think, from mid-back length hair, it can go up to between shoulder and arm pit length. It might be a shock, initially.
Secondly, I would recommend doing this only if you're maintaining the length you have now. If you're growing your hair then I don't suggest it because the chemicals involved can REALLY damage not just the ends, but the whole internal structure of the hair shafts! So you may need to trim because at one point the tangles will get so bad you'll have no other choice!
Thirdly, we all want what we cannot have :-P. Cruel, but true. My hair is 3a/b type curly.. I have S curls. Literally. They wind around like big, bold 'S'es. When I was younger I wanted pin straight hair, and now I wouldn't mind having wavy hair.. It's a bit too curly for comfort, especially until it grows out. The length is all hidden!
Good luck in what you decide.
Kinky hair as such refers to African American hair which grows in coils! To achieve that with straight hair you will need one powerful-ass permanent solution!

Kinky can also refer to standard very curly hair as well, it's just normally associated wth black hair. That hairtype can also be called curly.
I don't think anyone can get anything close to that hair type with a perm. I don't think anyone makes rods that small. XD;
My hair is similar to Shypii's, actually, only I'm 3b/3c with mostly 3b. To be honest, I went through the same thing as him; I used to want straight hair, now I'd love wavy. I love my hair, but it looks reeeeeaaaaaally short when it's past my shoulders in actuality.
The rest of what he says stands. You'll do damage to your hair without fail. There's no way to escape that. also, dependingon how fine your hair is, it may not take the perm at all, or it may fall out quickly. Also, despite it's name, it's only permanent if it takes properly and ONLY on the hair that's been permed. It will still grow out straight and you'll either have to get it done AGAIN, or chop, most likely, unless it falls out over time.
If I were you I'd skip the perm as I went thorough that phase many moons ago and the chemicals nearly wrecked my hair.Oh yea the curls looked cool at first but after awhile my hair started getting so knotted up I was afraid that I was going to have to cut a lot off.Thankfully I got through that phase and now all is well in the hair world:)Good luck on whatever you decided to do.Cheers....

Here's a pic I found in my photo vault.LOL.This is one of the rare few pics of what my hair looked liked when I had the perm done in the late 1980s.Hey, this could be you!!

Be very carefull when perming your hair, it can do a lot of damage.
You can always set in with light alcohol-free gell and rollers occasionally. There would be no damage at all if you don't use a hairdryer. You can see what you'd look like with curly hair and, if you don't like it or think the process too time-consuming, you can wash it out with your next shampoo.
As your hair is now getting some very nice length (you look really good with long hair, BTW) you can also tie in in a ponytail after your shampoo and then braid the ponytail. (Get your new husband to help you!) Allow it to dry overnight. When you unloosen the braid you should have some very impressive waves that will also wash out with your next shampoo.
I wouldn't go the route of a permanent wave. I would hate for you to damage your lovely hair.
Hi Dino, well I discussed this with Hairball a few days ago, and we both decided although we liked others hair, we were in fact happy with our lot. I guess the only real and semi permanent way is as Hairball says and get a perm.
BTW mines very kinky and I have no choice, its cranium chaos!!
Cheers Dave
Thank you, everybody, for your well-considered comments! I appreciate all the great input, and found shypii's comments especially helpful. I guess it's true that we always want what we can't have {sigh}, and I certainly don't want to damage my hair. (For the record, my hair tends to be quite fine.)
And I'm envious of all your beautiful hair! nuttidave, shypii, glasseyes, you all have outstanding hair that I'm envious of.
Guymarch -- thanks for the sweet comments! And I have done the braid before, with my husband's help, and I like the way it turns out the next morning, so maybe I'll just stick with that.
Hairball (Mark) -- whoohoo! Great pic! I remember those days!
saw on the board you were interested in kinky or permed hair like Kenny G's -this site would give you plenty of ideas not only of styles but the process. You may want a spiral perm. a tight perm or even a set on perm rods to see if it's the look you really want before you commit. I'd do it for you but we're on different coasts. AJ
