Hey I lurk on the forums quit often and have posted a few times. I have frizzy curly hair past my shoulders. It seems to be in decent condition but it sheds like crazy. I have to shampoo my hair every other day usually because it gets very oliy on the scalp, and I condition everyday. When I take a shower a good ammount of hair comes out and clogs up the skimmer in my drain, also after I gently detangle by hair starting at the ends and working my way up while it is still wet because if not it becomes frizzy mess. My problem is while my hair is drying it sheds all over the back of my shirt. By the time it is completly dry my whole back where my hair lays is filled with shedded hair. I use a lint roller to remove the hair and the whole roller will be filled with hair. I know it is normal to shed over a hundred hairs a day, but is this normal to shed this much? Does anybody else have this problem? Also is there any way I can get my hair to not shed as much? Because it can be a pain sometimes, and this is pretty much the only problem I have with my hair besides it getting frizzy.
My hair does the same thing---it's about midback, kind of curly and frizzy, and it sheds quite a bit and tends to be oily at the scalp, just like yours.
First, I don't know if you do or not, but have you tried brushing your hair before you get in the shower? I do that, then I also brush it immediately afterward (like you said, keeps it from getting frizzy). That helped me a lot with the shedding, because otherwise I'd end up with a ton of hair all over the place. At least that way it ends up on the brush rather than your clothes or the carpet. Also gather up the ends and make sure to grab any loose strands while your hair is still wet.
As for reducing shedding, I notice I lose less hair if I keep it in a braid most of the time (especially at night while sleeping). Braids are also a good trick to help your hair dry without being frizzy and without having to use a flat iron or gel or mousse. It takes awhile to get it dry, but if you can do it at night before bed, you'll wake up in the morning, undo your braid and your hair will be a lot less frizzy (don't brush it, just leave it).
Hair grows in cycles. There will be times you'll lose what seems to be a ton of hair, but it's just natural. Chances are too, that you aren't losing as much as you think. The longer your hair, the more it seems you lose, when in fact the longer strands are just giving the illusion that you're losing a lot. Try counting the strands sometime; that will give you a good idea of whether or not it's just normal shedding.
With the oily scalp, just make sure you only condition the ends (some people condition their whole head...not sure why). Then of course, wash often. Not much you can do about it, unfortunately, except try different shampoos and find one that works a bit better for you.
Hey, thanks for the advice. Ive never tried combing before taking a shower. Ill have to give that a shot, if I can even get a comb through my hair dry, my hair is pretty thick and curly. Im also going to have to try a braid, my hair is now long enough to briad but I havent made an attemp yet. As far as conditioning goes I do only condition ends but it seems to still get oily pretty quik, maybe its the shampoo im using.

Counting is too hard so I weigh it. 750mg on 11/4 and 670mg on 11/11 with 330mg in between washes. This is the worst shedding I can remember. I have determined that the most likely cause is the scalp fungus that causes dandruff. My keyboard is covered with dandruff flakes, requiring nearly daily wipe downs. I am trying a vinegar rinse, which is supposed to kill this fungus. Dilute it about 10 to 1. I hope this will work for me and I hope it will work for you as well.

Hey Scott thanks alot for the reply. I knew there had to be someone out there with this same problem. It is a good possibly it is caused by scalp fungus, because I have alof of dandruff/flakes and irrited, itchy scalp.
This started in late June for me, and I am doing an investigation to determine how many others here are having the same problem. I started a new thread above to find out.

I also was shedding quite a bit up until about a month ago, when I began using a vinegar rinse. I would wash and condition as usual (which is daily for me), and then mix about 2 quarts of warm water with Apple Cider Vinegar (about 4-6 ounces) and pour over my head as a final rinse. Do not rinse; the vinegar rinse is the final rinse.
I have seen my shedding reduced about 90% in the last month.
