I hear some people say that having long hair is a big hassle. What? Here's the way I see it, I pay nothing for hair cuts and shampoo/condition 2 or 3 times a week, towel dry. Other than that I spend less than five minutes a day on it, brush it (2 min), putting it in a ponytail for work (15 sec.), a little hair gel to keep those annoying tendrils out of my face (15 sec.) and brushing it out when I get home (2 min). That's it.
A shaved co-worker told me he has to shave his head every morning! That I couldn't tolerate.
Hi Paul. You get the point. It becomes a lot easier once you pass the 'awkward stage'. To me, it takes a little longer than two minutes to comb my hair, since my hair is wavy and I shed a lot. Your hair do have some waves to it but is probably straighter than mine. I cannot make a complete ponytail yet. After washing or wetting my hair, it takes my hair a full hour to dry, and I mostly dry my hair before combing it. as for shaved heads, shaved heads makes men look like militants, gang members or criminals.

Hey your hair looks great! I don't sepend alot of time on mine either. And your right, saves the money of the hair cuts LOL Hey I do have a question though, you said you put a gell in your hair. Can I ask what kind and what you are using it exactly for? Thanks and hope all is good!
I use a styling gel with a strength of 8 from wal-mart. L.A.Looks seems like a good brand.
When I put my hair in a ponytail for work there is always a few strands that tend to get loose during the day and hang down in my face. The gel keeps them in place. Just a dab will do on the top and sides. A big tooth comb is also good to get that "slicked back" look.
The gel is also great for that "Bad Hair" phase when your bangs are about nose length and won't reach the ponytail holder!
Welcome Paul. Your mane looks great. Hair at your length is probably the easiest to maintain. When it gets past your waist it will require a bit more work.
Scott
Absalom, that's a great name man!
I intend to grow it waist length but it seems to have stopped. I think it breaks off.
Great site, by the way. I stumbled across it by accident. I want to thank you and the rest of the Moderation Crew for it!
When I was in school (70's) everybody was growing their hair and talking about longhair and how cool it is. Now it's hard to find that attitude. It's hard to believe how society has become even more intolerant, I thought by now there would be no bias against any kind of hair style.
Thanks.
Your hair appears to be about 18 inches long right now. Do you lose a lot of hair strands that are relatively short? A shed strand will have a little bulb at the end, a broken hair will be short and not have a bulb at the end. You can see a photo of one of my shed strands as well as the rather weathered end of that strand of my hair. This is what it looked like 32 inches from that bulb end. Notice that the cuticle scales are damaged and some are missing.
I too, found this site by accident, about 6 years ago. We try to keep this site warm, friendly, and civil. As far as I know ours is the largest men's longhair site on the web.
The 70s was a great time for long hair. I live in a very liberal and long hair friendly part of the country. (The SF Bay Area.) There has been an increase of guys with long hair here. There are a lot of boys in their teens and tweens growing it long too.
Scott
Yeah, they are growing it here too - or trying to! (Alabama). The school board seems to be a bunch of hair Nazis. They actually have a rule against it. Can you believe that? I'm going to post a description of this problem in a little while.
Hey Paul, welcome ! You have THE look ;) I agree with you for the money saving.
Bye
Vivien
Right on, thats what I tell people. They think long haired guys are high maintenance for some reason! Bad ass hair man, you remind me of Dave Mustaine from Megadeth or a Viking.
I'll take that as a compliment, thanks!
Great looking hair you've got there.
For me long hair is more work then short, I spend quite some time untangling and showering is also more work.
But I really like having long hair so it's work the time for me.
Paul;
You have absolutely beautiful hair (great colour) and I agree with all you have said. One of the reasons I began my longhair journey was a day I went for a hair because "it was time for a haircut". After waiting for 45 minutes in an uncomfortable shop, "Guido" took four minutes to shear me and charged $18 (silly me, then tipped him). When I got to my car and looked in the mirror, I said to myself....."Man, that seemed expensive and that not what I want to look like, I liked it shaggy better". Over the years, the money saved is significant.
Funny, until you mentioned it, I really had not realized that shaved heads have to be shaved every day.....UGH!
Thanks for Sharing and I hope we see more of you.

White Tail, that describes my last hair cut to a tee!
Hi Paul,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and thank you for sharing this photo! Your hair is in excellent condition with a lot of shine, and is an inspiration to everyone! I had short hair for about 4 years, and went back to long hair, starting in 2004. The rewards are well worth it!
Keep it growing,
David
Thanks David
It seems a little strange to be able to talk about wearing your hair long. I haven't been able to do that since I was in high school. Back then it was cool to grow it and to compliment others about their hair.
I ain't used to posting either.
Paul
very awesome hair Paul! how long you been growing it brother me and you have the exact same hair type wavy/curly and im at 20 months growth hopefully mine will look like that when it gets your length! do you get any trims or just let it grow most of the time?
I never cut it. Perish the thought. People always told me to trim it if I wanted it to grow but that don't seem to work (for me anyway).
It hasn't been cut for the better part of 10 years but it grew to this length in about 2, it was already sorta long when I decided to ignore the dirty looks and wear it the way I really wanted to.
It doesn't seem to want to grow past this point and I'm trying to figure out what to do about that. I want it waist length.
Hey Paul, thanks for the inspirational paragraph! Great pic of you and your super hair.
Cheers,
Max
Thanks Max
This is a great site, I had no idea there was such a creature.
Funny thing, around here (Alabama), longhair seems to be a taboo subject even with those who wear it long. It wasn't in the 70's.
Well said! Compared to the hassle I used to go through with the clippers every four to six weeks in my own bathroom, having long hair is much easier.
And you have a fantastic, red mane! Love the t-shirt too. :-)
Mouse
Thanks Mouse, I found it in a little Celtic shop in Gatlinburg.
First of all, welcome to the board. Second, amazing hair. Congrats on a great look.
I wash mine twice a week tops, unless I've been busy with the sports, so that saves on the shampoo and conditioner - not that I conditioned when it was short. I plait my mop these days as it's prone to tangling if I leave it loose, but that takes about five minutes. I've started oiling it now and then too, which isn't necessary, but it's made a big difference to the condition of my hair, which is important as I want to see how long I can grow it, so I think it's worth a the extra minute or two, plus it's made brushing easier so it actually saves time. I can get my hair brushed, oiled and plaited in under eight minutes. When I think back to the short-hair days, I'd spend more time than that putting gel or wax in and styling it.
I haven't had a professional cut in over four years. I used to get it trimmed every four weeks, so that's about 52 cuts I've missed out on so I've saved at least £520, which is somewhere in the region of $900. I spend about £10 every couple of months on shampoo and conditioner. The bottle of oil cost £6 and I've used about a tenth of it in two months, so in four years, I've probably spent about £250-300 tops on hair products etc, so I've saved about £200-250. Actually, it's more than that, because I didn't take into account how much I spent on shampoos, gels and waxes whenn I had short hair, so it's probably another couple of hundred.
Adding all that together, it seems to make good economic sense to keep it growing.
Thanks for adding that up, I was thinking I might spend more on shampoo and conditioner but you're right, the cost of all those haircuts do add up. You won't believe how many people I know who try to argue with me about it.
I've had the same comments over the years so I did keep track of my spending at one point. Actually, I've probably saved more because the cost of haircuts has gone up since I last had one.
The comment that always made me laugh was, "The barber's children are going hungry."
Unfortunately my experience hasn't been quite so easy. Been having some significant troubles with tangles/knots lately, so I'm probably spending a good 10 minutes each morning getting out tangles, and another few minutes here and there thru the day trying to keep it "organized". And washing/drying it takes significantly more time now that when it was short. However, the extra time is well worth it for the benefits of having long hair.
And shaving my entire head every day??? Right!!! There's a reason I grew a beard the moment I left the Navy!!!
I'm sorry to hear that. It's great that you decided to stick it out, I hope you don't cut it.
I've learned a few things on this site already, a lot of people put their hair in a tail at night to keep it from tangling!
During work (carpenter) I keep mine in a tail with a little gel on the sides to keep it in place. I believe it would get seriously tangled if I didn't.
I was in the army 4 years. My hair was long before I went in but not as long as it is now. The whole time I was in I thought about growing it out as soon as my enlistment was over. Surprisingly I didn't. It was about 3 or 4 years before I committed to growing it out and even then I couldn't decide how to wear it. I even had a mullet once.
out of the topic but i cannot keep it to myself...
LOVELY RED HAIR! i adore that colour!!!
I agree totally Paul, I do nothing with mine except condition once a week. I guess if you think about it and worry how it looks all the time it could get stressful, but I don't.
Welcome to MLHH Paul, see you around.

I never tire of hearing that!
Thanks
Paul
