Hey guys, I have shoulder-length hair. I recently fractured a bone in my left wrist, and now have a cast preventing me from using my left hand.
I used to manage my long hair by tying it in a pony-tail, but I can no longer manage the hair elastic with just one working hand.
Can you suggest any alternatives for me?
I am thinking of buying a claw-clip, even though you hardly ever see men wearing them.
As far as suggestions go, keep in mind that I can only use my right hand (typing this one-handed is a real chore, BTW).
Thanks.
of course, we can't know what your style really is, but maybe a cap of some sort, elastic-banded or not, would cover the clip and also help keep the rest in control.
some gel (or more gel) may help to keep it stylishly in control if you wear it loose.
I've had one shoulder broken and know what it's like to be suddenly one-handed temporarily. having that other hand to work with is about just as important as that opposable thumb. Best of luck.
I have been trying to think of a solution, but the only thing that comes to mind is asking someone else to help you. I had an arm injury 14 years ago folowing a car accident, and lost more than 50% ue of my right arm, so I was having problems doing many things you take for granted. I just left my hair loose. But I had my mom come in every day and put my socks and shoes on. You could try the claw clip, but it is really tricky to get all the hair gathered in the clip. I even tried to see if I could tail my hair one-handed, it is next to impossible to get all the hair gathered and pulled through the elastic. Sorry I can't give you any ideas. :(
Hi,
Most of the time I just wear my hair down. For more formal occasions (such as work), I have found that pony ties tend to slip when one cannot wrap all of one's hair in them, so I stick with the claw clips. I hold my hair in a clump while holding the claw clip between my index finger and thumb, then snap it shut. For the hairs that don't want to fit in the claw I use some bobby pins.
As always, your mileage may vary, but I find that most people are curious about my lack of a left hand than my wearing of long hair and my ways of controlling it, if that is the matter that concerns you.
As for typing with one hand, the keys [FGHJ] make a nice home row. Of course, it helps to have been using those keys as a home row for about half of my life [grin].

Thanks to all who replied. For the past two days, I've been letting my hair down loose; I'm getting used to having it unrestrained. For windy days, I can wear my one - and only - skull cap.
Aside from hair elastics, I used to manage hair with bandanas, but can no longer do so.
Anyway, here's a pic. One (immobile) thumb up for being so kind as to reply!

Hi Slapnut,
Well I've been giving this topic a lot of thought for awhile. I just have the use of my left arm and hand. I'm 19 months into growing my hair. It's curly so I'm a while from a ponytail. Here are my thoughts, maybe some of you out there, one winged or not, might give it a try as a proof of concept.
1. Using a cord such as a leather thong about 3 feet long
2. Make a loop and tie a slip knot or noose at the end.
3. At the other end tie a knot to keep the end from pulling through the noose.
4. Put the noose around your neck, turning the noose so the knot is in front. Careful here!
5. Put on a T-shirt OVER your hair
6. Gather your hair behind.
7. Use a claw clip or two to secure your hair into a tail
8. Pull the noose over your head slowly, and gradually inch it tighter
9. Tighten the noose around the hair above the clips
10. At this point you'll have your hair secured (I hope)
11. Using the loose end, wrap the thong around your hair and tie some kind of one handed knot. The rest of the hanging thong can be hidden under the hair or shirt. An option might be to wrap the thong completely around the hair somehow as a sleeve
12. Remove the clips, and shirt if necessary.
13. Success! Probably will work best for low tails with longer hair.
Hopefully someone may try this and come up with a method that really works. Maybe it will work better with wet hair. Perhaps you don't need to put the noose around your neck, but the hair can be put into the loop after the clips are applied. This method would allow a shorter loop. Also a sliding glass or metal bead could work rather than a knot.
I see it now! A product called the 'MLHH Hair Noose'
Let me know if any of you tries this.
Cheers!

Sounds too complicated for me!
Yep! LOL. When I get to pony tail length I'll let it flow or find someone to tie it up if I can. Before growing for 19 months, I was buzzed, don't want to go there again!
Hope you have a speedy recovery!
