Well, I think the most useful thing I've done so far for my hair is NOT wash it for a while, LOL. I can't beleive it, but it works. My hair is more moldable now. I'm just glad I don't live with my mom anymore, or she'd be on my case about how gross it is. Keep in mind, for years and years, she barked at me that my hair smelled, and I need to "wash it every day." Now that I have longer hair, now I need to wash it less, which strikes me as hilarious.
But anyway, I have a question...
My friend has long long hair and it's very straight and thinner. But he has a big problem with dandruff. He says he washes his hair every other day, and I told him that might be drying it out. But, he said if he doesn't wash it that much, it tangles a lot. Any advice for my friend?
I brush my hair with a boar pig brush to hold it shiny and sometimes have a water-only wash or get my ends wet, oil them and then everyday-combing.
I just wash my hair every week.
I think it depends what type of hair you have...
I have thick, straight hair, and I usually wash it every day or every other day, if I go longer, it gets really oily, though if I shampoo too much, it gets sorta dry...
As in your friends' sake, shampooing shouldn't do much of damage to his hair, as long as he uses a good conditioner, he'll be fine...but I wouldnt get too thick of a conditioner, since he has thinner hair...
What I do most the time is when I wash my hair, get the shampoo, and dilute it a little with water, and it does fine, cause like I said above, my hair gets dry if I use too much shampoo, and kinda poofy...
Ask em to try that, or some people use natural shampoos, maybe that as well! lol
Peace!

I have to say washing your hair EVERY day is a bit overkill. Infact maybe not that good for it. Shampoos have ingredients in them to strip oil out of your hair. Great, if you have excess dirt in your hair, but after one day even the greasiest hair couldn't be dirty enough for another washing. Long hair needs the oil from the scalp to "condition" the ends of your hair. This is improved by brushing or combing your hair once everyday. The brushing/combing takes the oild from the scalp down to the ends of the hair. Most of us on this board wash our hair once every 7-10 days, which is generally regular enough for people with normal hair. This would probably be decreased depending on how oily your scalp is or how much exercise you do.
Take care
Neil
Wow, even *I* think 7-10 days is kinda out there. I can't imagine the looks and comments my mom would give if she saw this post. XD
But you're all right - it certainly is different having longer hair than short, as far as washing frequency goes. When my hair was short (1-3 inches long), it would become *noticeably* oily smelling in just 2 days, and my mom would make funny faces and demand I wash it... twice.
Now that my hair is longer, washing it seems to make it thin and wispy - I just washed it yesterday after about 5 days, and wow, what a difference. My shampoo has conditioner, but maybe I should try a shampoo+conditioner suited for dry hair.
@Neil: What would you recommend for my friend whose hair gets tangled if he doesn't wash it often?
He can try to wash with conditioner only, it works great for me I always detangle my hair in the shower with loads of conditioner.
I alternate between a shampoo wash and a condioner wash, both once a week.
That's pretty much what I would have said. Other than that, regular finger combing is worth giving a try.
Not washing your hair can lead to a build up of too much Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the scalp, which can lead to increased hair loss. I have excessive shedding if I go more than two days without washing, but everyone is different (I usually wash every other day).
Your scalp needs washing, just like the rest of your body. One could make the argument that washing your skin can lead to it drying out....this might be true depending on the product you use.
NEVER shampoo the length of your long hair. That WILL lead to drying it out. Only shampoo the scalp.
Before you shampoo, apply conditioner to the length of your hair from the ears down the rest of the length. The conditioner will protect the length from the drying effect of the shampoo.
Now hang on a sec, I'm getting conflicting messages here...
Is the natural oil in your hair good or bad???
