1 Year ago my natural hair color was dark brown, now it's more of a middle term, not completely dark brown, but not fully light brown either -.-.Anyone getting the same results due to the sunlight?
Yes, though at the length my hair is I am not all that sure that it is "sun only." (Mine shades to lighter the further down the hair grows.) Sunlight is known to lighten hair.........but it is also about impossible to avoid. Hair is a bit stronger than you might think and I am sure that nature has taken this into consideration so that we DO have hair to help keep heat in our bodies and thus make sure we are in a better position for survival. I really would't worry, but I wouldn't resort to try to colour it back either as THAT would be damaging in itself. Best thing to do is make sure you use PLENTY of conditioner when washing.
Best of luck to you. Your long hair despite all remains a sensation! :-)
Justin~
Wait,so sunlight is harmful to hair?Damn it,I might've known it XD.But would it really be harmful to my hair if I just let the sun lighten it at times,as it is impossible to avoid?I've never thought about coloring it back, and I actually like it better like this.I do use plenty of conditioner when washing,in fact,I'm using Garnier Fructis Oil Repair treatment, which I been using for many months, and it has been giving me good results.Still,my hair is pretty dry at times,is there any treatment I could do to reverse this situation? Thanks in advance,Justin, and you've been a great inspiration to me throughout my hair journey.Keep it up!
Hey Rafael-
*Actually, if one were to stop and think about it, just about everything takes its toll on ones hair. (Lots of wind blowing it around, pollution in the air, air-born particles. Dust.) And yet the hair CAN seem to take this. I would say that if you are out in the sun, as long as your washing routine has been well done and your hair has been treated with plenty of conditioner so as not to all dry-out, you should be fine. I mean really, we guys hardly want to live our entire lives in a sealed container because of long hair. LOL :-)
*Sure looks nice to me.
*Sounds (and looks) like you are doing all of the right things. One thing you might try is leaving conditioner in your hair for 5-10 minutes before washing out, and when washing out don't wash all of it out..........leave a slight residue behind for some protection. This may well take care of the dryness of which you speak. You might also want to experiment with "spray-in conditioner" to see if this makes the hair less dry feeling.
*Great inspiration? Well, thanks for the compliment. Sometimes I wonder. But I am always happy to help the guys out that are really serious about taking care of their hair who want to grow it long. Ha Ha Ha.........I have been puting up a series (not complete yet) on YouTube about long hair and have made them as non-sterile as possible. You would not believe how many have written that are very serious about growing out their hair despite my off-the-wall sense of humor. Good! This shows interest all around the world and before long I shall do one of commonly asked questions. If you want a good laugh at a living antique, just look-up: FOR MEN WITH LONG HAIR on YouTube and it will bring-up the 3 videos on so far. When finished, despite the wacky humor, guys will be armed with lots of helpful information. If you click on the blue "Musique3579" it will bring you to some of the music I have composed. It is here that one can find out what I am really all about as a composer just by listening.
Take care Rafael. In my opinion you couldn't be doing better and are headed for sensational killer-great long hair! :-)
Justin~
Thanks for all the tips and compliments,Justin, and I'll try the leave in conditioner to see if it works.I'll certainly look for men with longhair videos on youtube,as well as the songs you've composed so far and that are stored in your account. Thanks again for being so supportive!Take care =).
Rafael,
I've noticed the same thing with my hair and we're about in the same stage it looks like. My hair is significantly lighter near the ends and while my hair is naturally brown/ auburn, the sun has given me a much redder tint to much of my hair.
I don't know if it's necessarily good or bad for your hair, it's just changing the pigment in your hair.
-Austin
Nice to know I'm not the only one going through this hair color changing phase XD.Take care Justin, and your hair looks great and suits you really well!
Yep, Im getting the same effect light/reddish brown tips. As long as they are just pigment changes Ive grown fond of them.
Hi Rafael, yes I have the same, my hair is quite streaked and has lots of natural highlights - I really like them, I hope you like yours too.
Cheers Dave
I love the way the color of some strands of mine are changing, especially some in the bangs that are nearly blonde when exposed to sunlight.
Hmm, I think it looks pretty neat to be honest :) Your hair looks good, Rafael!
Thanks,Hegg, and yours is a true inspiration to many.
When you have long hair it is exposed to the weather for as long the strands last - 2, 3 years or more. The sun is the main culprit - UV rays degrade the pigments - but the temperature variations etc. are also contributing.
In my case (and others too...) age brings even more radical changes in the hair color...

A Linux Longhair
Got it.I just hope my hair doesn't go white that fast!lol
Hi Rafael,
My work does keep me outdoors a lot but since I don't want any accidents with my longhair at work I always cover it with a baseball cap so in effect that also keeps the sun off my head.Usually when I do wear my hair down outdoors it more at night time so sun isn't an issue. If I look back at old photos of my hair it does seem like the colour has changed over the years.I was very blonde when I was younger but now it actually seems like it has darkened some.Of course some gray is sneaking in there too!LOL.
Anyway I'd listen to the excellent advice given from longhaired pros like Justin.I mean anyone with waist length hair has got to know what they are talking about. You've got a fantastic mane Rafael so just treat it right and the rest will be easy my friend.Cheers buddy.
Mark
Thanks,Mark, and Justin is definetelly someone we can look up to,as he is such an experienced person when it comes to long hair.I'll try to use caps more often, though I like the way my hair color is changing =/.
Rafael, Yes i experience the same thing. My hair is darker brown with auburn highlights (slightly graying). in the summer with excessive sun exposure it turns almost blonde.
peace, jonalbear
Wow,I wonder if I'll ever manage to achieve such cool looking color for my hair by getting sunlight,as yours is splendid.
Yes, my natural hair color matches yours, dark brown. In the spring i started noticing that the hair that sits on top was getting noticeably lighter moving from the dark brown shade to a lighter reddish tint but the hair underneath stayed dark brown. I was even asked if i'd colored it.
It has stopped getting lighter from what i've noticed but now i'm left with streaks or highlights that mix in with the darker hair. It doesn't look like salon style highlights (thank god) so i don't mind it. Since i've always just had short dark hair, I didn't realize that as my hair grew longer that it would undergo this color change, but i'm happy with it.
The same EXACT thing happened to me. My hair used to be dark brown and now it has blonde and even red in it...I've never dyed my hair before. I'm guessing it's due to sunlight. I actually like it even more now. Awesome photo by the way, you're gaining some great length and the layered look does you well.
Interesting topic Rafael.
-Phil
Hey Rafael,
My hair too changes colour during the summer. It goes from a chestnut brown colour to having natural blonde streak highlights in it which I think makes the hair appear a bit lighter. Haven't perceived any damage from the sunlight. Don't worry too much Rafael hair is tough and durable by nature and your hair by the ways is looking great!
Best,
Duncan
